Yearly Archives: 2012

Let’s face it, most games based on a movie are rushed to coincide with the release of the movie and end up being rubbish. However, this is not the case with the universal free app – MIB 3. Gameloft have been responsible for the game’s production and in their usual style have created an engaging app. Although this review is on an iPhone, this is a universal app for the iPad also.

There are many aliens inspired by the MIB world from the movie in the game. You can explore New York and fight aliens in such locations as Brooklyn or even New York. The game uses two different times, as in the movie – 1969 and 2012.
What is MIB 3’s secret to being so popular already? The answer is the quality of the app and the fact that it has been outsourced to a big development company.
This game has a Sim City feel to it which is good news for people who like building structures in games. You can build up a control centre to achieve weapons upgrades for example. You can even train agents so that they better perform on their assigned missions. There are many gadgets to acquire in game, such as the Noisy Cricket or the Neuralyzer.
Alone you must run the agency and build your team, but there is in game help as you play. The object of the game is to defeat ‘Radiant’ from creating chaos on Earth.
It’s nice to see a game where the movie makers have obviously given the rights to a proven developer for the game, instead of contracting out a developer on a time limit and budget. A nice move by the producers of MIB. What is MIB 3’s draw is that there are so many different features in the game primarily.

Icon for ViberViber is one of the social applications that is about to become extremely popular if the makers play their cards right. It’s been available on Android, Blackberry and iOS for a while now, and has just made its début on Windows Phone too.

The idea of the app is to allow people to connect with one another through phone calls and text message, wherever they are in the world, without paying a penny. You could have a Blackberry Curve or the brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 from Vodafone or O2, and so long as you have the app, communicate with your friends for free.

Of course both of you need to have the app in order for this to work. It’s just a download away though and so simple to use. How does it work? Well, it basically searches through your phone book on your behalf and finds everyone who has the app. It then syncs your phone so these contacts show up on the Viber app.

The reason it is so simple? Unlike with the likes of MSN and Twitter, You don’t need an email address to add a contact. It automatically locates the friends with it for you, which is much less hassle for you.

What does it mean? If you were to go on a holiday, and wanted to communicate with people back home for free, you can send a message or call someone through the app wherever you are in the world. No overseas charges. It’s a bit like Skype in that way. And you won’t end up with an enormous phone bill at the end of your trip.

If you have an Android, Blackberry or iPhone at the moment, you can make calls and text messages through the app now. The Windows Phone version of Viber doesn’t have the capability to make calls yet, although they are working on this.

Give it a go.

Fairway Solitaire by Big Fish games is a real classic. This review is for Fairway Solitaire is on the iPhone, but there is also a version available for the iPad, called ‘Fairway Solitaire HD’. Many golf courses are included on multiple levels.

This game I’d rate as being in my top three favourite apps of all time, right up there with Garageband and Galaxy On Fire 2. This game easily makes it into the featured area of this website.

This app goes under the guise of ‘solitaire’ but in fact it is a totally original game. There is even a storyline to this app, with animated cut scenes included. Your enemy is a gopher who is constantly trying to harass you. There is excellent commentary in the game too which makes it feel like you are on an actual golf course. The golf courses have their own individual feel.

The feel of the game is excellent and the way that it is paired with golf is more fun than it sounds. When you click on a chosen course it could be a 3 hole, 6 hole or a 9 hole course and you can get a birdie, eagle, double eagle or even a perfect score. For a really good run you are awarded in-game money, and for a long perfect run you with 1000 in game bucks.

To start with you are put on a driving range and taught all there is to know about the game.

There is a shop in the game where you can buy different gizmos and you can unlock trophies for certain milestones that you pass within the game.

I’ve bought the full version of this game on the iPad and it is giving me hours of fun game play. The price of unlocking the full game is reasonable as you get what you pay for and don’t have to buy any more in-app purchases if you don’t want to.

You also have a golf bag where you can win or buy golf clubs. These golf clubs correspond to card numbers, so if you are stuck you can pull one out of the bag. If you do this too often however, you run out of in-game money pretty quickly.

There are 3 commentators who tell jokes and comment in a funny way as you are playing. There is even a mad Scotsman who is a real character.

This app is very solid and has never crashed on me once yet over many game play hours.

The free version gives you about 9 courses, which is quite generous as a taster.

The game is 256 MB in total to download. Personally, I welcome big downloads of games as it means more content and boy you get a lot of content with this game.

To be honest, I was occasionally played solitaire, as in solitaire in a normal format, but after playing Fairway Solitaire the standard game of solitaire, unless I’m playing with real cards now seems boring compared to this game which has taken solitaire to a whole new level. In fact, this is the first card game that I’ve seen integrated with the latest game mechanics. I wonder what the future of card games will be after this milestone app? Perhaps there is scope for 3D variations of popular card games . . . ?

In all a really excellent app.

Update: In a recent app update: 30 new golf courses / levels have been added!

Wonderland 2 by Chillingo is a zombie games adventure with a difference. You don’t just kill zombies, you have to clear up the mess that comes with zombie slaying . . .

Your character is ‘Chuck’, a zombie slayer stroke clean up guy. Your first mission starts in a diner, where you have to protect a mysterious jukebox that works without electricity and contains a mysterious artifact.

You are given a time limit in the game in the form of an hour glass. Then, when you start a level you have a few seconds to try and board up the windows of the establishment that you are trying to protect. For this you have to tap on a wood icon and then tap the hammer that appears in the bottom right of the screen. There are also special weapons to use, such as a shotgun blast radius option, special bullets and also a disc shaped weapon that can take out groups of zombies at once. Then, at the end of each level you are given a few seconds to clear up the mess that the disintegrated zombies have left behind. To do this you tap on a mop icon in the bottom left of the screen.

When it comes to zombie games this game is quite original.

There are various types of zombies that attack you from normal run of the mill zombies to fierce girl zombies and even bully zombies.

You have the option to buy even more weapons through in-app purchases.

The graphics in the game are solid. Perhaps you are fed up of zombie games by now as this theme is overcooked. I especially like the main level selection screen which shows a 3D town from above.

This game is free on the App Store and well worth a download.

Snuggle Truck is a driving game that starts off relatively easy, but gets more and more challenging as the game goes on.

The object is to transport all the cute characters to their destinationin tact. You tilt your device to direct a smooth landing after jumps, or to juggle the passengers if they look like they’re going to fall out.
There are extra passengers that you can collect for a bonus called ‘fuzzies’. However, these extra passengers are thrown up into the air at different angles making them a challenge to pick up. You trigger these extra passengers by going past checkpoints.
There is a good tutorial where a wise owl pops up to educate you about how to play the game. Then on the basic levels you can just accelerate through the level with ease. Although on harder levels you must slow down to avoid hazards, like bumps and low hanging cave ceilings.
You are awarded various medals for completing levels which includes a time factored challenge. You can even make up and share your own level creations.
This driving game has a feel good factor included.
There is an in-app purchase option if you wish to convert all characters to pandas and the app is game centred enabled.
Higher levels open up when you have cleared key levels. By shaking your device you can enable ‘Turbo’ mode.
This driving game will especially appeal to children as the game is cute.
The review was for the iPhone version of the game, however, there is also a version for the iPad.

Flick Soccer by Full Fat for the iPhone is also available on the iPad as ‘Flick Soccer HD’. This is a very simple to play and innovative soccer game where the object is to hit a target and score goals.

This app is one of the most popular apps on the app store, and no wonder as it is a highly addictive 3D goal making game which relies on feel and touch.

There are many modes available in the game and we’ll run through them here. Firstly, at the top of the menu screen there is a ‘Quickshot’ mode. In this mode you have to aim for a target in the goal. You have to get the ball past the goalkeeper into the goal to start with and if you hit the blue circle you get 1 second added to your time, 2 seconds added for the white circle hit and 3 seconds added for a red bull’s eye hit. With ‘Quickshot’ you have a limited amount of time, so you have to make your shots really count at the beginning, as the target gets smaller as you progress. The goalkeeper also gets progressively more active and skilled, as well as presenting you with more difficult angles when taking your shots at goal. After your ‘Quickshot’ session has ended you will be given a level score – if you score 8 or above you are doing really well, but a 6 or a 7 is respectable too.

Throughout the game, you’ll want to apply ‘Aftertouch’ to bend or alter the path of the ball to confuse the goalkeeper. If you shoot straight then the goalkeeper will have more chance of saving your goal. The harder you flick the ball the more speed is imparted onto the ball. I found that shooting at just off of the correct angle to the target, but then correcting the path of the ball to the target was best, as the goalkeeper is confused and you still have a method for reaching the target. If you flick to the sides after taking the shot it imparts bend onto the ball, and if you flick up or down it obviously causes the ball to bend upwards or downwards. Curved shots gain more points. Long range shots are worth more points also.

A really innovative soccer game that is original.

‘Endurance’ mode is perhaps my favourite mode in the game. In this mode you are given 3 balls and you have to not only score a goal but also make sure you hit the target as one of your ball lives will be taken away if you miss. There are bonus circles that appear in the goal to hit, but they are not easy to hit as they move as well as the target. If you hit the bull’s eye you can claim an extra ball. Defenders are added as you progress and you have to wait for the target to be in an area where you think you can avoid the keeper and the defenders. As with ‘Quickshot’ more you are awarded a level rating.

‘Challenge’ more is the main mode of the game and . . . you guessed it, you have to complete challenges, ranging from trainee level up to superstar level. Depending on your performance, you will be awarded bronze, silver or gold star awards.

‘Crossbar’ is quite a bizarre and fun level where you have to hit the crossbar to score points. There will be two defenders, but no goalie for you avoid. If you hit the crossbar multiple times you will score extra points. There are also mini targets that move across the crossbar, such as ‘X2’ points upgrades. At the end of this level you will be given a score, as this mode is all about getting the maximum possible amount of points that you can.

‘Smash It!’ is another quirky level where you have to smash glass panels within the goal mouth and clear all five levels as fast as you possibly can. The panes of glass go into a split pane design as you go up the five levels and defenders are added to make it more awkward. This is a score based level.

The game is very straight forward; however, the developer has covered all bases by providing a tutorial with the game located at the bottom of the screen (the question mark icon). I should imagine that only people with hangovers would ever need to go through this tutorial as there are tips throughout the game to help you along. The object of the game is explained not only in the title of the game, but also in the icon – you flick the ball at the target.

In all, nice 3D game graphics, a simple to grasp interface on the main screen. Really sensitive control of the ball and good in-game instructions throughout the game. This game I’m going to include in the ‘Featured Apps’ section of AppReviews4U as it is a really solidly programmed, addictive and novel game worthy of a download. And of course it’s a completely free soccer game!

Icon for 'Around Cal'

‘AroundCal – from Event to Task’ . . . It’s not just a run of the mill yearly calendar, in fact it’s something quite different.

‘Around Cal – from Event to Task’ by Diethard Seiferth is a high quality app that will make your standard calendar look very basic in comparison. There are multiple features included in this app for scheduling and managing tasks that you are guaranteed to have every task management tool and feature you’ll ever need in this astounding app,

First of all, at first glance, don’t make the mistake of thinking that this is just another variation of the standard yearly calendar you are supplied with on your device. In fact it’s very different. You can add photos to tasks, image tags and even voice memos. Uncompleted tasks can be given different priority ratings and if you don’t complete the task on the planned day, you can easily move the task to the present day. You can organise your tasks within projects, which you can also prioritise. If you don’t know what day to schedule your tasks or projects, no problem, as you can categorise them as ‘Someday projects/tasks’.

There is even a birthday alarm included. You can record actions, such as for real working hours, send them via an email attachment and you can record any amount of breaks. In fact, there are too many features to list in this description without making your head spin. If you want to see all of the features of this app you can click on the App Store Link in this post to see all the extras you get in this app.

The good news is that even a user manual is included in this app. So throw away the Filofax and scraps of paper filling your desk drawers. This app is a task management tool on steroids!

This app is priced at $9.99 on the App Store, which I think is reasonable for a professionally put together app of this standard and quality. I can’t imagine how long this app, with so many features, would have taken to program. A yearly calendar on steroids! However, for those of you hesitant as to whether this app is the right tool for you, there is also a free version available for sampling some of the features included.

Interview with an iOS Developer

A text interview with Diethard Seiferth, who has been kind enough to give people an idea of what it is like to develop apps for iOS. Diethard’s most well known app so far is ‘AroundCal’ and he will be revealing a new universal app creation very soon. Ever wonder how smartphone app developers work?

1) How many apps have you produced and for which platforms/operating systems?

I’ve designed and programmed three apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch and one universal app for the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch.

2) Which is your most popular app?

My most popular app is AroundCal for the iPhone. There is also a free version available

3) Which programming languages do you use and which one is your favourite language to programme in?

I use Objective-C, but for other projects (not mobile apps) I use C, C++ or Java.

4) What made you decide to start programming apps?

After I bought my first Mobile Device from Apple, an iPod Touch, I saw which that new things were possible to realize and develop and that it was fun to think about it as well as design and develop my first app.

5) Can you tell us about any challenges or learning curves you’ve encountered whilst developing apps?

Yes, for e.g. my best running app AroundCal is running very well. AroundCal already was under the first ten productivity apps in the German App Store, and when people use it of course they can add a lot of things to each calendar event, like voice memos, photos, tag images, prioritise and more, which makes AroundCal different to other calendar apps. But, AroundCal has a lot of features, and people must learn how to use it. I’ve added a tutorial inside the app, of course one cannot see all the actions which are possible to do.

And today I would say that AroundCal is more like a “Windows program” than a small app for the iPhone. I thought for me that my future apps should be able to operate without a tutorial, it must be clear for the user to know how to use it. For e.g. my newest app Calquencer is a small app, allowing people to produce sequences of calendar events. It’s easy to handle, no tutorial is necessary. And Calquencer is my first app running on both the iPhone and iPad, and I learned that the iPad is not only a big iPhone, it needs a bigger design phase. For this app, I’ve spent most of the time getting iCloud running well, and I’ve learned a lot.

6) What do your family and friends think about your job/hobby developing apps?

Oh, that’s very different. My wife is not so happy, because of course I’m now sitting and spending a lot of time in my office creating apps.

7) What advice would you give for people thinking of starting to develop apps?

Think differently! What can I make what is special? What do other apps not have?

What do people get if they use my app? Define a few major functions and do not try to add the same functionality as for a desktop app.

Think about the differences of iPhone and iPad: People use the iPhone if they travel and want to do something fast.

Create a clear design. Think how a user would operate your app.

If you have the app already in your head and some a designs on paper, start developing. Think from time to time if you are on the right track.

8 ) Do you have any future projects on the horizon?

Yes, I’m now very far with a new universal App.

9) What kind of apps are you most interested in developing and what kind of apps are you least interested in developing?

Of course I program the apps in my free time, I’m very open minded in what to do. My available apps are calendar apps, my new one will go into the learning category. And possible I will create future apps for different categories.

10) How do you advertise or gain exposure for your apps?

In the past I tried a lot of things. But I´ve learned that advertising needs a lot of money and if you do not invest much money, it will not work. I now use twitter to give new information to people about my apps, and I give away promo codes and write some sentences from time to time on different blogs. Today I think it’s much better to spend the time on a good design and making a good app, and then people will tell other people about this app.

Tour Las Vegas and snatch up the latest Las Vegas Deals in ‘TravelVegas – Las Vegas Deals’ by TravelVegas. This free iPhone app is all you will ever need if you are planning on travelling to Las Vegas and has a whole host of functions and handy tips included.

This app is a two-for-one app, in that as well as getting valuable advice within the travel guide section, you can also keep up to date with the latest Las Vegas deals too. I was honestly very surprised at the amount of information included in this app. After doing a search on the App Store, I found that for similar apps with this amount of content, you had to pay for the app. The developer has been very generous in putting up such a content rich app for absolutely free.

Although the app is programmed for the iPhone or iPod touch, when I opened this app on my iPad at x2, it looked really good and I usually use this app on my iPad. So if you have only an iPad, it looks perfectly okay on the iPad too as this is a utility app with several functions in mind: to clue you up on where to travel with tips to boot, and also to clue you in on the latest Las Vegas Deals.

You can select and view hotels to see which hotel takes your fancy in Las Vegas. From this app you can book hotels, restaurant tables and show tickets right form the app. You don’t need to use a telephone or website address hunt for the hotels, shows, restaurants and attractions too, as you just hit the ‘call’ button or go directly to the website in the application.

What I like about this app also is the fact that ratings are given by people as well as a star rating, so you can really get a good idea of the quality of the show, hotel or restaurant that you are interested in.

In the travel guide section there is some really valuable and practical advice on things like taxi tips for example. You can find out exactly how to pay and the best routes. With advice such as keeping your casino winnings in your pocket and paying from a separate wallet for safety.

This app has a wide array of tips and advice. There is even a map that you can pinch zoom in and out of, as well as the option to change the map view to a Google Earth map. There is even the latest weather information included in TravelVegas. It’s a winning situation if you download this app as you will not have to buy maps, travel guides or waste valuable time asking hotel staff questions about what attractions are around. In fact, if you make your own way around Las Vegas with this handy travel companion app, you will no doubt save more money, as you won’t be railroaded into taking tours to see things that are easily reachable anyway.

Personally, when I travel abroad, I like to be independent, having done my research on the place and tried my best to cut out any middlemen or tours where you have to live by a set schedule. This app is just the ticket for providing you with that kind of independence. After all, let’s face it, Las Vegas is pretty safe compared to some other places around the world and if you are clued up on how to get around and stay safe with ‘TravelVegas’ in Las Vegas, as well as getting all the best Las Vegas Deals, you are going to enjoy your stay a lot more, without tour guides ordering you around like cattle.

However, after saying this, for those people who love tours, you can even find the latest tours in ‘TravelVegas’ also. In fact, if you have travelled to Las Vegas before, this app will no doubt give you ideas on new places to visit, maybe with a few bargain deals snapped up along the way.

As I said in the video review, I like the icon for ‘TravelVegas’ because it is not cluttered with background graphics and is clear and bold. I prefer this kind of icon as it stands out in the app store and grabs your attention quicker.

Although there is a whole host of information packed into this valuable app, the app is not cluttered. The developer has taken the time to make navigation a breeze, with information being grouped into easily identifiable categories.

This app will be personally very handy for me as it is my dream to sometime in the near future travel to Las Vegas and play poker in one of the casinos there. For this reason, this app will stay on my device permanently.

There are thousands of high resolution photos in this app and the developer has obviously taken the time to compress these images as the app still retains a respectable size of just 19.3 MB. The interface of the app has been professionally thought out, as for such a wealth of information, the home screen is so clearly and simply laid out, with graphical and textual clues as to how to navigate around.

I particularly like the ‘click to call’ function and the fact that you can see when restaurants and attractions are open. With this functionality you can forget having to fumble around for phone books or asking around for phone numbers of places. You can access many of the hotels, restaurants and attractions’ websites direct from your device too. So that’s a big goodbye to having to spend precious time on your holiday sitting in Internet cafes.

What you download is what you get with ‘TravelVegas’, it has been put up in an old school style with no annoying pop up ads or disappointing in-app purchases options for functions that you really need. I can see a reverse in the current trend of in-app ads and purchases in favour of ‘what you download is what you get’ apps like ‘TravelVegas – Las Vegas Deals.’

The developer TravelVegas I can see as being successful is they continue to produce this calibre of app quality. This is a niche app that is not wildly general – it focuses on people travelling to Las Vegas and the material and functions of this app are relevant to the goal and aim of the app, and that is to give you all you need for a holiday in Vegas on one single device. Convenient with a capital ‘C’.

So, in conclusion, this is the ideal app to research the Las Vegas area, book your hotel, transportation, look for attractions and clue yourself up on the latest Las Vegas bargain deals. You can even book your flight from this app!

Transcript

Hi, Kevin here from appcomrade.com doing an app review for ‘TravelVegas – Las Vegas Deals” by TravelVegas. This app is a free iPhone guide to Las Vegas and has many features.

I like the icon, as it’s a nice simple design that stands out.

Start application

We’ll just go ahead and start the application up. Now, first of all I’d like to say that having been to America twice on holiday and having really enjoyed my stay there. Las Vegas has always been a place I’d love to visit next in America.

I have to admit that I love playing Texas Hold ‘Em Poker, so a trip to a Las Vegas casino is something that I’d love to do and this app will be an ideal travel companion, as you’ll see in this review.

So, for people thinking of travelling to Vegas, this app will be invaluable. You can see on the opening screen that there are many options here. Such as the latest deals, hotels, shows, places to eat, nightlife, transportation, tours, attractions and even air travel options.

It’s mind boggling, the information that is available in this app. I’ve looked on the App Store for similar apps and I couldn’t find one as detailed as this app that is free to download.

As you can see, we also have 3 tabs at the bottom for travel guides and favourites, as well as the home screen button, which we’re on now. I like the navigation home screen as it’s clearly laid out with text and visual icon images.

Before we click on one of the icons, I’d like to show you a great feature that the developer TravelVegas has incorporated into the home screen here.

Click on weather icon

Clicking on the weather icon it gives us a weather report of the weather conditions in Las Vegas. As you can see, it’s 27 degrees celsius with 15mph winds today. That’s a nice feature to check the weather if you are landing in Las Vegas.

I don’t know what we’d need in our travel bag after downloading this app. It’s safe to say though that our travel bag is going to be pretty light!

Click on ‘Deals’

Clicking on the ‘Deals’ icon here brings up a list that’s constantly being updated, bringing us all of the best deals up for grabs.

Click on ‘Limo Tour Offer’

This offer has recently expired but just clicking on ‘Limo Tour’ here as an example, I can see that I could have got 50% off a 60 minute stretch limo tour with champagne included.

Back to ‘Home Sreen’ – ‘Hotels’

We have hotel recommendations and information, complete with star ratings. Clicking on the Four Seasons hotel I can call them, get directions, book a room, look at where they are on the map and even visit their website. It even tells me about where to eat there also. . . . That’s a lot of useful information there. Very handy.

Back to ‘Home Screen’ – ‘Shows’

I can bring up information about shows. Such as the ‘Amazing Jonathan’ show, which again gives me all the information I need, complete with reviews.

Back to ‘Home Screen’ – ‘Dining’

There is dining information. Here I’m looking at the Alize restaurant information. Again, you can call them or book a table directly from this app. Or look on their website for more information. As you can see, even the opening and closing hours can be seen.

Back to ‘Home Screen’ – ‘Nightlife’

There are suggestions for nightlife, such as the bare pool lounge, which sounds like an interesting place, wink, wink 🙂

Back to ‘Home Screen’ – ‘Transportation’

You can arrange transportation, such as Avis. Here I can click on an individual branch near to wherever I am to book a car.

Click on ‘Search Icon’

There is a search utility included in this app if you want to look for anything in particular.

Click on ‘Home Screen’ – ‘Attractions’

There is advice for attractions to see, such as the ‘Adventure Dome’.

Click on ‘Details’

I don’t know what the Adventure Doom is all about, so as you can see, I can click on ‘details’ and the app brings up detailed information for me. Telling me that there are 25 rides and even a climbing wall there. And even a 4-D Spongebob Squarepants show for the children.

Click on ‘Home Screen’ – ‘Air’

As if this wasn’t complete enough, you can even book your flight through this app!.

Conclusion

I’d have to say that after looking in detail at TravelVegas – Las Vegas Deals, I’m really impressed with the huge amount of detail and advice that you can find. This app would literally be all you need for travelling to Las Vegas, besides your clothes and a passport.

You don’t have to buy a map, tour guides or do Internet research on the area. It will personally give me confidence when I travel to Vegas as this app can clue you up on where to go and what deals are on too. No need to get dragged around on a tour with this app if you don’t want to. But hey, if you like tours, you can find them in this app too.

I always try to give constructive criticism to the developer when giving an app review, but I admit that I was really racking my brains on this one, as it really is packed with all the features you’ll ever need. Perhaps in the ‘Travel Guides’ section emergency phone numbers could be added, together with any dangers or scams to look out for, as there always are in tourist areas. However, this is not a criticism, more of an idea for an added information post, that would be easy to add. Yeah, I really can’t fault this app to be honest.

In a nutshell, I’m really impressed with this app as it is a very useful tool and helps in real world situations when travelling to Vegas. In fact, if you’ve been to Vegas before, this app will no doubt come in handy for researching some areas that you maybe haven’t yet been to.

The layout is clean, clear and simple to use and navigate around. I’d highly recommend this app as it will save you money and time.

Well, that’s all from me reviewing ‘TravelVegas – Las Vegas Deal’ by TravelVegas. Thank you for watching!
