No designer worth their salt travels without an iPad or any other tablet PC. They are designed to inspire creativity with a simple touch of the screen.

There are plenty of design apps out there, from the fun and frivolous, to the serious and technical side of the design process.  Plus, there are lots of peripheral apps to keep you organised, provide a canvas for your bursts of inspiration and keep you on target to meet your deadlines. Below are just a few of the best.

Sketching Apps

Inspiration can strike at any time. So, you need something with you at all times in which you can sketch out those ideas.  Why not try one of the following?

  • Penultimate: This is a simple to use app, but it has a style to it that sets it apart from other apps in this genre. It has been designed for you to be able to use it just about anywhere, whether you need to jot down your ideas in note form, or sketch out a rough design. It offers you different paper options and drawing methods too – whatever you need to get your ideas onto virtual paper.
  • SketchBook Pro: Just like the software available for your desktop and laptop computers, the SketchBook Pro app for your iPad exudes the same professional quality. You are provided with a complete set of sketching, drawing and painting tools, which you can access via the specially adapted iPad friendly interface.

If font manipulation is your thing, and you enjoy using words in a whole new way, you will enjoy trying out these clever apps:

  • iFontMaker: This is the first font editor designed exclusively for the iPad. In just five minutes, you can create your own unique font. Once created, you then have the facility to email it or convert it to a TTF file, which can then be used in software applications like Microsoft Office (Windows and Mac) and Adobe CreativeSuite, plus you can start using it as a web font.
  • TypeDrawing for iPad: For something that is so simple to use, TypeDrawing provides you with amazing results. You have the ability to create your own unique typography, and add bespoke watermarks across your photos.

Productivity & Notes Apps

You have deadlines to meet, projects to manage and calls to make. Having somewhere to keep track of everything is a necessity.  These apps can help:

  • Notes Plus: This app is well organised, practical and clever. It is a note taking tool that enables you to write with your finger. Even the largest of fingers can write neatly using the magnifier option which allows you to write fine text. There is also a keyboard option if you prefer. Notes can be exported as PDF files, and documents can also be uploaded to Google Docs.
  • Moodboard Pro: Moodboard offers a place for you to store all of the things that provide you with inspiration. It is a fantastic tool for project planning and idea storming. Whether you are planning a presentation, or a new project, you can keep all of your ideas in one place.

Survival desert scene image

Success is survival. â??Leonard Cohen

In a survival situation, success is the only option, as the alternative is death. With that said, you should do everything in your power to ensure you are successful at surviving. This article will explain some of the most important basics to understand when dealing with any survival situation. There will be no specifics here as each would need an article in themselves. What we are going to discuss are the absolute basic and fundamental ideas that surround ensuring your chances of survival are as high as possible. So without further ado, letâ??s get into the meat of it.

Rules of Three For Human Survival

Before you consider how to survive, itâ??s best to first know what is needed for survival. This is where â??The Rule of Threesâ? comes into play. The average human can only live for 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without a regulated body temperature, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. The Rules of Three is a guideline of how to prioritize your basic survival skills. This means you first need adequate shelter, then sufficient potable water, and finally food with calories.

SPEAR

As for many other things, any survival situation can be broken down into a clever acronym, this one being SPEAR. It stands for Stop, Plan, Execute, Asses, and Re-evaluate. In essence, when a situation arises, you first stop to consider what is happening. You then make a plan based on your observation and execute said plan. You then asses the success of your plan, and re-evaluate again to see if anything can be done better or more efficiently. By running through these steps in your mind, you will help to keep yourself calm and collected, which is first and foremost the most important thing you can do. Nothing good comes from chaos and confusion, and these need to be eradicated before attempting to do anything else.

Expect the Worst

When it comes to survival, you should just assume youâ??re alone in the world because when it comes down to it, you are. You can certainly hope that help will arrive, but you should never, ever, under any circumstances, rely on that belief. The reason you expect the worst is not to accept death, but prepare to fight against it, with life and limb. Expecting the worst merely puts you in the right mind set, because when you expect better, and it doesnâ??t come, you are going to be let down and your moral will diminish. And next to the Rule of Threes, having a high spirit is the next most important thing. Without it, youâ??ll simply give up.

Have a Proper Plan

You should always be ready for any situation depending on the environment and setting youâ??re intending to be in. That will increase your number of options for developing a plan drastically. This means knowing what is needed for a survival situation depending on the climate, whether, potential dangers, and so on. After being prepared for a particular situation, the next most important thing is to know your strengths, weaknesses, what youâ??re capable of, and incapable of. If you know you canâ??t start a fire without modern tools, perhaps you should learn that before venturing into the woods. If you donâ??t know how to float without floatation devices, perhaps you should learn that before you go sailing. Understanding what you are incapable of is actually more important than anything else, as it alerts you as to what you need to learn. What you know isnâ??t the problem, itâ??s what you donâ??t know.

Stay Calm

If the scenario you found yourself in was so unexpected that you did not have a plan, itâ??s time to make one on the fly. But before anything can happen, you need to collect your senses and remain calm. No good plan comes about from fear and confusion, and as such, those need to be eliminated. Once youâ??ve calmed yourself down, you immediately need to assess any potential threats whether those be from animals, people, or the elements. Once those have been figured out, you then worry over finding shelter, water, and finally food. But remember, before anything else, stay calm.

Understand People Change When Under Significant Stress

This is perhaps the hardest for some to understand when they are in survival situations with other people. Generally, when people are scared, confused, or panicked, they are going to act drastically different than they would normally under any other circumstance. Instincts kick in hard and often timeâ??s people ride those instincts as they donâ??t know what else to do. Itâ??s not uncommon for the most timid and sensible people to become savages under the right situation. They will take whatâ??s needed, either through subterfuge or force, to ensure first and foremost their safety and survival. This is important to understand because you can easily be taken off guard if you are calm and sensible while everyone around you is panicked.

Stay Motivated and Industrious

Finally, when a survival situation lasts for an extended period of time, the stress and worry of your condition can weigh heavily on you. Itâ??s important to keep high spirits, stay motivated, and more importantly, stay industrious and active. If you have the energy, always work toward improving your situation. Whether that is to be found by rescue personnel, for comfort, for safety, food, water, the list is endless. You should never sit idly by, hoping and waiting to be saved, because often times, that simply may not happen for some time.

DSC_3920Being a geek doesnâ??t imply being a social leper anymore. Perhaps itâ??s because pop culture loves the zero-to-hero storyline, where the smart, sensitive and quirky geek who stays true to himself bests the school bully and gets the girl. For whatever reason, the heyday of the all-American jocks and cheerleaders seem to be over, with geek chic on the rise.

An integral aspect of geek culture is conventions. We all know about Star Trek conventions for Trekkies and Twilight conventions for TwiHard fans. But have you heard of some these more obscure conventions, who for some reason seem to remain so popular?

Anthrocon

Anthrocon is the world’s largest convention for people who love anthropomorphics, which are humanlike animal characters with humanlike features â?? in other words cartoon animals who can walk and talk. The theme for Anthrocon 2013, is “The Fast and the Furriousâ?.

Lebowski Fest

If you havenâ??t seen the Coen Brotherâ??s comedy The Big Lebowski, youâ??ve missed out. However, as cool as the The Dude is, how does a 1998 film maintain a dedicated following willing to attend annual conventions 15 years on? Nonetheless, man, the Lebowski Fest continues to celebrate the cult classic with white Russians and bowling.

Gathering of the Gargoyles

Gargolyes was a short-lived Disney cartoon cancelled in 1996. Somehow, the fan base was so loyal and dedicated that the annual Gathering of the Gargoyles remained a popular event from 1997 all the way into 2009.

BronyCon

The fact that there may be conventions of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is in no way unexpected, as there are legions of girls who idealise the franchise. But a convention specifically for men from their teen years through adulthood who call themselves Bronies is not so expected. One of the most recent â??maneâ? events of BronyCon was the comedy show, â??Whose Line Is It Anypony?â?

Blobfest

Blobfest is a convention held annually in honour of the 1958 film, The Blob. Yip, The Blob has an annual convention more than half a decade on in the town of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania â?? one of the filming locations. Activities include a re-enactment of the scene in which cinemagoers run screaming from the town’s theatre.

So Why Do We Have These Obscure Conventions?

Perhaps these cartoons, films and characters have some sort of secret quality to them that is lost on most â??normalâ? folk, and these conventions provide a platform for bringing the enlightened few together. Perhaps geeking out at run of the mill comic-cons became too mainstream. Perhaps itâ??s a badge of pride, that shows that youâ??re not ashamed to have interests out of the norm, and that youâ??re not just a black sheep, but a pink and purple polka dotted My Little Pony sheep.

Whatever the reason and no matter how bizarre or obscure we might think them, these conventions show that everyone has the need to seek out like-minded people to share a love. An interesting point would be whether these genres would still inspire such ardent devotion if there werenâ??t regular gatherings giving that sense of community and identity. Perhaps then, whatâ??s important isnâ??t so much simply the topic people celebrate, but the chance to celebrate it with others. Where the weird in me meets the weird in you.

The classic retro Spectrum game ‘Jet Set Willy’ is now available to play on your iPad.

If you were around when the Spectrum was brought out you’ll no doubt remember that you were either a Spectrum fanatic or a Commodore fan. I was definitely a Spectrum fanatic, I loved the look of the Spectrum with its quirky rainbow graphics and rubber keys. I loved programming in BASIC and would spend hours messing around making home brew games. The games came to nothing as I was too young to put together a project, but the Spectrum undoubtably got me into programming.

One of the games that I mostly played on the Spectrum was Jet Set Willy. I never completed the game, as it had no ‘save game’ feature and would have taken hours of continual play to even come close to clearing it. So when I saw Jet Set Willy on the App Store, how could I resist downloading it? It is a legend of a game, but I only had fuzzy memories of the gameplay.

The object of the game is to guide the Manic Miner around a mansion to clear up after a party. Manic Miner is now wealthy from his last adventures but has a lot of maintainance to do around his new property.

When I first opened the app, I was pleased to see a ‘History’ section, where you can read about how in 1984 Software Projects released Jet Set Willy as a sequel to Manic Miner. It also details how back then software piracy was almost considered as normal. I remember the magazines that would print cracks and cheat codes for the games of the time.

You can adjust the settings and the interface is as close to the rubber-keyed, colourful Spectrum keyboard as possible. The developers have done a great job at including that nostalgic Spectrum feel into the game.

You have several options: You can play the standard version or the infinite lives version.

Let me tell you now that I did not appreciate, until replaying this game in later life, how difficult games were back then compared to the relatively easy games of today, that can be cleared without too much time invested. The game is hard! Why? Because back then there was no ‘save game’ option. When your lives run out you have to start at the beginning again, which is why there is an Infinite Lives version included in the app.

The graphics are identical to back in the day. You have to be pixel perfect in your jumps and movements to clear rooms in the house. If you are young and want to get a feel for retro games back in the day, this is the app to download. Be warned however that games were built for hardened gamers back then, with no save game option. If you cleared a game like Jet Set Willy back then, your friends would give you admiration for weeks afterward.

Mission Accomplished

This game is as identical as you can get to the original game. In fact, it is identical, apart from playing it on your iPad instead of a Spectrum. If you ever owned a Spectrum its worth the download just for the nostalgic feel in itself. This game offers a break for gamers who find games easy to clear. I challenge new-age gamers to clear this game. If you do, leave a comment and I’ll take my hat off to you.

Room to improve

There was no ‘save game’ option back in the day, which is true with this app and also true to the original version. The developers have implemented an Infinite Lives option which is a good idea, so that you don’t have to start at the beginning again. However, I’d like to see a new ‘Save Game’ option added to Jet Set Willy with a certain amount of lives – 3 perhaps. This would mean that you could clear the game room by room, but it would be more of a challenge than the Infinite Lives option.

Conclusion

Great fun and a flashback to the past. Even if you just download and played Jet Set Willy every now and again, memories will flood back to from when you were a child. The game is true to the original and is just so different to modern games. A challenge to hard-core gamers who dare to go retro and clear a genuinely hard game.

My Background in Outsourcing

I donâ??t consider myself a programmer. But if I see some code in front of me (as long as it is css, html, javascript, or php) I can read it fairly well.

However, Iâ??ve had lots of experience training interns and mentoring grade-schoolers. Doing those 2 things really prepared me for hiring an outsourced team from India. I found my particular team using a service called Odesk.com. They charge a 10% commission on any person or team that you end up paying or contracting; itâ??s free to use until then.

How To Get Started: Use Odesk.com

I submitted a project description to Odesk.com. That was very easy. It walks you through all the steps, helps you find candidates, and handles all the billing and time tracking.

I had to pick the team that seemed the most reputable (they all submitted examples of their work, but some were freelancers, and some were from actual development companies). I chose my team based on their experience with projects that were pretty similar to mine.

And secondarily the team I chose seemed to have a firm grasp of English. That proved to be a misconception on my part. The person whom I thought I hired was in reality the director of Business Development for the programming company. The actual developer is not nearly as articulate. But Iâ??ll talk about that more later.

The team I have worked with all live in India and are all very anxious to please. But they are not creative in the least. Therefore, I have to spell out each task to them as if they had a 5th grade education.

And not to slight the 5th graders at all; itâ??s just that the simpler I make my tasks for my India team, the quicker and more accurately they accomplish them.

You Might Want To Brush up on Your Grammar

If youâ??re going to outsource from India, or any 3rd world for that matter, you should have excellent written communication skills. Not just your average â??Oh, I can write an email with blinding speed and have a 0 inbox policy.â?

What you need to be able to do is deconstruct a fairly complex idea, and write it in words that your 10 year old would understand. If you donâ??t have a 10 year old handy, try writing a technical document your grandma would understand.

Photoshop is Your Best Friend

You should also have a favorite photo editing software that youâ??re familiar with. A picture is literally worth 1000 words or more when trying to describe anything to an outsourced team.

A Big Mistake

I thought I was going to need to get up at the crack of dawn every day and have a skype call with my team. Nope. Not only is it nearly impossible to understand their English, I found myself worrying about if I had just told them to nuke the US or not. Literally.

Donâ??t worry about the different time zones. Teams in India will generally be working from about midnight to 7 or maybe 8 am. Any communication you need to have doesnâ??t require instant feedback; in a development project, taking the time to write out a very simple task is worth the wait.

Understand The Handwriting on The Wall

You should have a grasp of some programming language, either to be able to read it or interpret it. Before starting any coding project in general, you should have already decided what program language youâ??re going to need anyway.

There are 2 reasons you need to know how to read code: 1) It is super easy for an outsourced coder to write a piece of code that seems to function well, which then breaks on the next version of your system.  2) Sometimes you can help the coders by providing them snippets of code for examples; being able to read code in the first place makes providing relevant examples pretty painless.

Making Realistic Timelines

If you have to report to someone on when the project will be done, always plan on adding at least 7 days to any time estimate. For most projects, thatâ??s a safe plan. For a coding project, thatâ??s a minimum.

And donâ??t bother telling your outsourced team when you want to complete the project; theyâ??ll take that date to mean when they should start working.

Testing Environments

Itâ??s imperative that your team has a testing environment set up to test their code. But you should have a live version going alongside it at the same time so you can see live bugs and catch them before you release your beta version.

I like to break things; so by having a live product to test, it can easier to find the bugs than it would be to find bugs in a testing environment.

Additionally, asking family, friends, and coworkers to check out the latest new feature of the project helps you catch little nuances or even big ones that you may not have caught yourself. And it helps if they can all see the project in a live environment.

Setting Budgets Realistically

Itâ??s impossible to figure out exactly how much youâ??re going to have to budget out for a project before it starts. But you should have a goal budget in mind; and make your team sign an agreement that they will get x amount of items done within that budget.

Most development firms will give you a written estimate of the time and cost they believe that your project will require. You should use that as a guide; nothing more.

Handling Problems and Stress

In developing, as in life, the only things that are certain to remain unchanged are stress and problems. So just an FYI: assume there will be a problem or 20 to figure out every week, and youâ??ll be pretty well prepared for any project.

The Moral of The Story

If you want to outsource from India, expect delays, budget overages, disappointment, and frustration. But if you know how to be organized and explain yourself well, you can have a successful product launch.

Adam Torkildson is a Senior Associate at Snapp Conner PR. He is the lead developer of the PR Scorecard product, which was built with help from an outsourced team in India through the use of Odesk.com

Tic Toc Timers is an application created by Sliday Ltd. It is free and available on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

This app is truly extraordinary when it comes to productivity software. Tic Toc Timers allows you to run multiple timers for different tasks so that youâ??re always on top of your goals.

Each page can hold up to six timers on it. Timers can be added to a page with their own custom icon. Timer icons do not only help you remember what youâ??re timing yourself on, but also have their own alarm sound. The unique icons and alarms make it easy for you to remember what you need to do when the timer is up.

You could add a cup icon timer to remind yourself to get a cup of coffee with a friend tomorrow, an egg timer to remind you about the food you need to buy at the store when you get home, and a phone icon to remind you to call your friend later.

When an alarm goes off youâ??ll see the icon and hear the specific sound, so youâ??ll quickly be reminded what you need to do. This application takes the Get Things Done system to the next level by allowing you to manage not only reminders, but also time for tasks you need to complete.

Mission Accomplished

Multiple pages of timers let you time a lot of tasks at a time. With over 20 different timer icons you can also rest assured you wonâ??t run out of meaningful timers.

Room to improve

It would be nice if you could add notes to timers for free. If you buy the egg timer through the in-app purchase you can add a food list to it.

Conclusion

Since this app is free itâ??s definitely worth a try. If you like getting things done or always forget things, then Tic Toc Timers is a great solution for keeping yourself on task.

On March 26, 2013, the Dragon Capsule left the International Space Station after three weeks, concluding its mission to deliver science equipment and supplies to the astronauts aboard the station. Released remotely by astronauts manning a robotic arm, the Dragon returned to earth with experiment samples gathered from the station.

The Dragon Capsule made its first visit to space in May of 2012. A commercial space vehicle designed and manufactured by California transportation company Space Exploration Technologies Corporation â?? SpaceX for short â?? the Dragon Capsule was built for the express purpose of providing a reusable vehicle to transport parts, equipment, and eventually humans, to and from Earth orbit.

In 2006, SpaceX received a COTS (Commercial Orbital Transportation Services) contract to design a vehicle and launch system capable of re-supplying the International Space Station. With their first successful demo mission in 2010, SpaceX became the first private company to successfully launch and recover a spacecraft â?? and hit another first in 2012, with their first successful mission to send the unmanned Dragon Capsule to dock with the ISS and then return to earth. According to rumor, the Dragon was named after “Puff the Magic Dragon,” as a response to critics saying commercial spaceflights were an impossibility.

While SpaceX has yet to undertake a commercial manned spaceflight, they have the first such mission planned for 2015, using the DragonRider, a manned variant of the Dragon. The DragonRider’s design is geared toward future lunar or Martian spaceflights.

Since 2012, the unmanned Dragon has been making regular runs to and from the International Space Station, under contract with NASA as part of their Commercial Resupply Services program. Capable of being operated remotely, the unmanned Dragon launches atop a reusable Falcon 9 booster (also designed and manufactured by SpaceX), a two-stage liquid oxygen rocket. Upon return to Earth, the Dragon deploys a chute for landing in the Pacific Ocean, where it is later recovered.

An Engineered Space Future

For its future flights, SpaceX plans to implement a system of landing gear and upgraded thrusters so the Dragon can make a landing on solid surfaces. The Dragon comes equipped with a pressurized cargo area for delivering its payload and a heat shield so it can survive re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. The Dragon also features solar arrays to provide power to the unit, and a series of discrete thrusters so it can maneuver in space.

As the first company to successfully launch and maintain a commercial spaceflight program, SpaceX is poised to play a huge part in the future of spaceflight, especially with the recent retirement of the NASA’s space shuttle program. SpaceX is on record as saying they want to be “the go-to cargo company of the future,” working with NASA and the Department of Defense to keep the space program on the cutting edge of technology and development. SpaceX wants to make commercial spaceflight economically sustainable.

So what does it take to work for an organization like SpaceX and become part of that future? Most likely, an engineering degree. Even though SpaceX prides itself on simple, functional design with an eye on reusability and sustainability, the Dragon and Falcon 9 programs are masterworks of engineering, not just at the conceptual level, but at the manufacturing level. SpaceX needs design engineers for its batteries and hardware, industrial manufacturing engineers for its avionics and electronics systems, aerodynamics engineers, and software engineers for its flight software, telemetry software, and hardware/software integration.

Commercial spaceflight was once thought to be a science-fiction dream, and launching and recovering spacecraft the territory of governments. But with the success of the Dragon capsule, it’s clear that commercial spaceflight is not only possible, it may guide the future of space exploration itself.

Taking your filmmaking hobby to the next level is a difficult task, but not one that should be written off.

As a student, you have plenty of opportunities to help you reach that next level. Student film festivals are extremely popular, and each year thousands of students win scholarships and awards for entering these events. Donâ??t be left out! While the competition can be nerve-wracking, donâ??t worry. Here are the top things judges seek out when looking at your film. Follow this list and youâ??ll be on the right track toward your first award.

1. Actors

While it might be convenient and fun to get your buddies to act in your movies, that doesnâ??t work out all the time. Acting is harder than it looks, and you can always spot a bad actor when he or she is placed next to good ones. Donâ??t let your film be known as the one with bad actors. Get the word out at your school that youâ??re looking for skilled actors and actresses to star in your movie. Youâ??ll get responses from interested people who most likely have talent.

2. Editing

Editing your movie well is also a daunting task. Not only do you need to have enough film to use, but you also need to be mindful of time restrictions in competitions. Judges are aware that editing is difficult, so donâ??t stress too much if your video doesnâ??t have Hollywood-level effects. However, you need to practice editing to get good at it. The best way to do so is to edit videos constantly. Start simple: There are plenty of apps for smartphones, like Givit, that provide basic editing tools. Record a few angles of you talking or doing simple tasks, and then edit them together. Practice makes perfect, so get to work!

3. Sound

There is nothing more detrimental to your film than bad sound. While a boom mike is obviously preferred, sometimes you have to do without. If thatâ??s the case, donâ??t be lazy. Re-record dialogue in the studio to make it sound clear and free of background noise. Be careful when putting music in â?? too loud and you will overpower the dialogue and strain your viewers; too quiet and you have the opposite problem. To test if you have the right mix, listen to your film from different devices and at different volumes. If any of them sound wrong, then consider going back and remixing your audio.

There are many things Brian enjoys writing about, but one of his favorites is technology. If you’d like more information regarding how to edit videos, please visit http://www.givit.com/

Game designer salary image

Hopeful young people from all over the world are going to school to become video game designers. Many of them languish on personal projects that are released online. Virtually all of them dream for working for one of the major companies.

Itâ??s a dream well worth having, but itâ??s important to understand the amount of work involved. Itâ??s also necessary to know things like their average income.

What Video Game Designers Are Making

Video game design is one of the most aggressively competitive creative fields there is. Like any creative arena, education is important, but a piece of paper on the wall isnâ??t quite as important as having the ideas to put what youâ??ve learned to work.

One of the nice things about being a video game designer is the tremendous potential for growth that exists for those who know what theyâ??re doing. The gaming industry continues to climb and evolve simultaneously. New companies and studios are setting up shop every single day. This is true for both development and community. That doesnâ??t make the industry as it pertains to video game designers any less cutthroat, but the best companies and studios are those that encourage two major things in their designers. They foster creativity and teamwork, while never losing sight of whatâ??s popular in the marketplace.

A game designer who is ready to put their ideas and talent to work over the course of many hours in a given week can go far.

Game designers survive in large part by building up a good track record. The video game designer salary for someone just starting out in the industry is around 46, 520 dollars. This is typical for those starting out, and it can remain in this general area for as long as the first three years. This is where that potential for growth comes into practice. 66, 423 dollars is the median salary for game designers who have been in the business for as little as three and as long as six years. A designer who has been in the business for this long has likely worked on some big titles by that point.

Those who stay in the business for longer than six years can potentially make as much 87, 437 dollars for an annual game designer salary in 2012. This is a salary afforded to veterans with that proven track record for being able to bring substance and style to the games they work on. Some designers have salaries that top out at the 100K, but this is the exception to the rule. Designers who make even more than that are extremely rare.

And for those who are curious, game designers in California topped the list by making as much as 86, 772 dollars annually.

The future of game designer salary

What does the future of game designer salaries hold? Itâ??s likely going to continue to climb. This remains a popular component for those aspiring to work in the video game industry someday.
