Gameplay

Cal Pow Dash is a free runner game created by Callum Mackay.

In this game you play as Cal Pow, a hero running to save his Princess. Along the way you’ll have to navigate through obstacles ranging from doors, snakes, knights, and many other things. While trying to stay alive you’ll also have the opportunity to collect gems.

Gems can be used once the game is over to upgrade Cal Pow so that you can get even further. You can also buy a Survival Game Mode with gems.

In addition to collecting gems while playing, you will also be able to collect power-ups that temporarily make you invincible or give you the ability to fly.

Mission Accomplished

This game has a nice atmosphere to it and its free. Definitely job well done on the developer’s part.

Room to improve

The door obstacles have three different positions where they show up, left, middle or right. These positions aren’t as aligned with the center of the screen as I would like and navigating through them sometimes feels awkward. But it’s certainly not a deal-breaker.

Conclusion

If you enjoy playing action games or runner games then you should give Cal Pow Dash a try. Even gamers that enjoy playing Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies or Super Hexagon might enjoy this game, because it’s all about beating your last high score and seeing how far you can get.

My Lands is a free game for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that provides gamers with the same experience that the PC version does.

One of the most interesting things about My Lands is that you can actually withdraw game money into real money. This game is the first online strategy game that offers such a feature.

Gameplay

Although My Lands doesn’t appear to be available on the U.S. App Store, I was able to test it out by playing the PC version. I believe it is also available in the U.K. App Store.

Learning how to play this game will take virtually no time if you’ve played Civilization in the past. And if you enjoy games like Civilization, Heroes 3, Age of Empires or Starcraft, then you’ll feel right at home playing the iOS or PC version of My Lands.

For people that haven’t played the strategy games mentioned above, then here’s a brief explanation of what to expect when playing My Lands:

  • Gather resources and expand your territory
  • Spy on enemies and raise your armies
  • Wage war
  • Join clans and create alliances
  • Work together with allies to dominate “Your Lands.”
  • Raise buildings and upgrade technology
  • Send spies to keep track enemy plans

Unlike regular strategy games that pit you against a computer or a few online members, My Lands is much more vast. With the amount of allies you can team up with and enemies you can fight, My Lands is a lot of fun and never gets old.

Gameplay

In this educational game children learn how to spell by trial and error. They are presented with a hand drawn picture that depicts the word they need to spell. Spelling of course is done by tapping an on-screen keyboard. Everytime a word is spelled correctly points are awarded and the next picture comes up. Children have 120 seconds to get as many words correct as they can before time runs out.

There are 15 categories of words, ranging from jobs and food to numbers and vegetables. All in all this game has over 800 words. So there’s plenty of vocabulary to be learned with Spelling Super Star.

Children can play by themselves on easy, medium or hard difficulty. If they don’t know the word they’re supposed to spell, they can tap on the hand drawn picture to hear the word.

Mission Accomplished

All of the hand drawn graphics in this Spelling Super Star are really great. Not to mention that children can also play in two player mode, where they compete with each other to see who can get the most points by spelling correctly.

Also, everytime 10 words are spelled correctly, a rocket is launched that releases bonus stars which children can grab to gain extra points and playing time.

Through the options screen of this game, children can also select their desired background art and keyboard color.

Room to improve

The keyboard for the one player mode is a standard QWERTY keyboard, while the keyboard for two player mode is an ABCDEFG keyboard. This can be kind of confusing if you’re switching between the two playing modes.

The keyboard layout is ABCDEFG to make it fair for players that don’t know the keyboard layout already.

Also in two player mode there is no home button like there is in the one player mode. This means that children have to wait for the game to end before returning home. Maybe there’s a good reason behind this, such as keeping kids from ending a two player game as a way to cheat.  The home button was in fact removed so that players can’t end the game early.

Conclusion

If your kid is learning how to spell, they’re in elementary school, or they are ESL students, then this is an app worth purchasing.  For $.99 it has a lot of vocab and features. It’s no surprise then that Spelling Super Star is rated an average of 4 1/2 stars on the App Store.
