Gameplay

TinyMons comes with two different game modes. The first game mode is call Fast as You Can, where the objective is to catch as many monsters as possible within 60 seconds. Every time you catch a monsteby dragging it into the left corner, a new monster that you have to catch is generated.

Monster Random Generation

Since the monsters all overlap while their moving around the screen, you will find yourself moving monsters around to get to the ones in the back layer. This game gets really frantic as you play in the last 20 seconds. By that time you’ll probably be flicking monsters all over the screen looking for the right one.

Once 60 seconds is up, you will be told the amount of monsters you catches. All high scores in Fast as You Can are also published on Gamecenter’s leaderboards.

The other game mode you can play is called Beat ‘Em All. This mode allows 2-4 players to compete against each other. Everyone has to find the same monster, and whoever drags it into their corner of the iPad first wins the round. The first player to win three rounds wins the game.

Beat 'Em All

Other Sections

In the main menu you can navigate to the “Tinycyclopadia” section which shows you all of the monsters in the game and their “proper” names. Through the main menu you can also navigate to the leaderboards and see who has the highest score in the world. Maybe you can beat it 😉

Mission Accomplished

This game has good graphics. If you take a look at the Tinycyclopadia for example, you will see that all of the monsters are stunning visually. There’s a reason this game is only available on the iPad: the developer is focused on quality. TinyMons simply wouldn’t look as good on an iPhone or iPod touch.

Room to improve

It would be nice if you could select the time limit for playing solo. 60 seconds seems like a bit too little. If you could choose between 60-180 seconds, I think the game would be better. The same goes for Beat ‘Em All. It would be nice if you could decide how many rounds a player has to win before he wins the game.

Conclusion

TinyMons is game is great for children and passing time with friends. With the Halloween season coming up, it’s quite a fitting app to try out. For $.99 the app is worth it for anyone who wants to entertain their children, or even professionally compete against other adults to see who is the best at monster catching.

When I first started this website I went through the Google guidelines and more or less followed their advice to the letter. After all, Google has become the number 1 search engine that most people use.

SEO ‘Professionals’ at the time I started running websites were promoting link wheels, link farms and various other link related SEO methods and even one that resembled a food pyramid that I’d seen in a health leaflet in a doctor’s surgery. I had random emails asking for reciprocal linking and also SEO ‘Professionals’ inviting me to load up my website URL into their super fast software blunderbus creation and blast it out to 100,000 sites. Any old sites back then of course, it could even have been the local vets website as long as it had a good PR value.

Luckily for me, when I first started blogging and running a website I wasn’t focused on monetising a website, I wanted to build up websites with articles that I personally found interesting to write. I also knew that most websites are shut down after the first 6 months because people begin to realise that the ‘get rich quick’ hype of what kind of money you can make with a website is usually overhyped. Because I wanted to run websites as a hobby initially, I didn’t bother with the link building rush and instead read through Google’s guidelines, implemented a few recommended SEO procedures for posts and left it like that. I was more concered about learning HTML so I could have a good foundation in website building than chasing traffic. I’m glad that I took the time to learn HTML in the end as even though I now use WordPress, I can always look under the hood and make changes if I need to. Plus, I’m counting on WordPress as a content management tool, rather than a safety net because I’m comfortable using HTML.

It wasn’t long after this that the Google algorithms were changed and eveyone who had used link farms and various link blasting methods were penalised. So, they started to be very careful and concentrated their links rather like snipers, placing links on high PR quality websites instead. Then came another set of algorithm changes, they couldn’t use the same URL link keywords, they had to change it to varying URL keywords, so again, people were penalised and the SEO ‘professionals’ who had advised on link building in the first place are now offering ‘link removal’ services with much success.

Let’s just stop and think about that . . . SEO ‘professionals’ advising to take advantage of a weakness in Google’s algorithms, people paying for the link placing services, then, Google fixes the weakness, no doubt alerted to the weakness by the types of SEO services popping up all over the place, Google then fixes the problem, then SEO ‘professionals’ charge the same people to take all the links back down and repair the damage. How insane is that?

It’s not just links, I have a friend who was advised by SEO ‘professionals’ to stuff his image descriptions with keywords. Google, after no doubt keeping a watchful eye on the translucent tactics of black hat SEO ‘professionals’ then penalised websites for doing this. The same happened with keyword stuffing. “Stuff the post with keywords!” was all you heard in the past, then posts stuffed with keywords were penalised. Really, it’s okay to put a keyword in the introduction main body and conclusion, plus the title, but would an article that’s stuffed with the same keyword be enjoyable to read? Just think about the word ‘SEO professional’ that I’ve deliberately overused in this article up to this point – it gets annoying, I’m even fed up of typing it already. It becomes repetitive to read and black hat tactics are so obvious as the methods are plastered all over the Internet, as if people working in the offices at Google will somehow be too pre-occupied to even bother to look at how their algorithms are being exploited in any way.

This is an obvious pattern; people try to exploit the loopholes, a service springs up to accomodate taking advantage of the loophole on a large scale. The office of professionals at Google who are on top of their game, identify the loophole easily, then fix the loophole, improve the algorithms and everyone’s stressed out saying “How did that happen?”

Some people blame Google, saying that once upon a time, Google said that links were good and now too many links are bad. Well, apart from having an almost complete monopoly on the search index of the Internet they are trying to promote quality content that people like to read, because that is precisely what backs up the credibility of their popular search engine. It’s their bread and butter so to speak that their whole business has sprung from. Such as when they altered the algorithms to punish websites with excessive ads. Why did they do this? So that a duff website full of ads would not be shown in the top ten of their search lists when people are counting on Google search to find the best content to fit their required needs.

The solution to avoiding getting caught up in being punished by Google is not to listen to advice from people exploiting loopholes, whether it’s a friend or an SEO enthusiast. Go middle of the road, with not too many ads up, genuine links, a few guest posts here and there but not too many, and dare I say it, ignore all of the SEO shortcut hype and tricks. Don’t do anything that wouldn’t make your Mum proud. You will have more time to write quality content for your site instead of messing around in the dark and dirt of SEO optimisation. Just optimise your posts healthily, with a few keywords (not too many) H1 or H2 heading and a meta description and you are free to get on and write.

This is a subjective viewpoint obviously, but it frees you up to concentrate on enjoying running a website, rather than feeling like a covert SEO agent trying to create ‘traffic’.

Of course, not all of Googles guidelines are welcome, even for someone who is not being swept along by any SEO loophole hype. A recent change in Google algorithms have indicated that if you have a tech blog, your site will rank higher if all your content is about tech, or if you have a health site, then your site will rank better if all your posts are health orientated. I don’t like this at all, as it is categorising website types on the Internet, it shouldn’t be treated like a library or an encyclopedia in my opinion. Websites should be full of great content, but people who run websites (I refuse to say ‘webmaster’, as it sounds like an egotistic title or a Lord of the Rings character) should be able to choose what content, or mix of content they want to put up. For instance, I run a tech site, but I have an ‘interesting articles’ category where I like to write about subjects that are offbeat. If I have the odd break from tech, I feel refreshed when I come back to it. I like the mix as it also gives visitors to the site another area which is varied to explore if they too have read about enough tech for the day.

So, do I take the ‘interesting artcles’ category down as many people have advised me to? Well, I’m not, as I primarily run a website for fun and interest, so if I’m penalised and lose a bit of PR value in the process then so be it. There are times when I’ve gone along with Google guidelines to the letter implementing white hat techniques to encourage organic traffic, but there are limits. I’m not being told what I can and can’t put up on my own website that I’m paying to have hosted. That’s my domain, excuse the pun, it’s my world to post up anything I want as long as it’s not offensive to people obviously. People have told me to put up only tech posts on a tech centred website, but why should I? In a petrol station, do they have just petrol there? No, they have coffee shops, convenience stores and areas to sit and chill out for variation.

So, in a nutshell, one SEO method that I am following is to ignore SEO hype and ignore Google when they overstep the content freedom line and just enjoy running websites, for fun primarily. If I find an article interesting, the chances are a few other people out there will too. If they were re-spun articles that have been farmed out to India, China or Amazon jungle tribes, or the site had 1000 ads on the homepage, no one would ever visit again. It’s also kind of liberating to hit a point where you’ve done what you can to implement white hat SEO and read through the Google guidelines, but enough’s enough, it’s your website, put up posts that you want, conserve your individuality and if you want to mix it up a bit at the expense of a little bit less traffic, why not? Be open to advice but don’t be controlled.

What are your views? I’ve given SEO services a bit of a bashing in this article, but to be fair, has anyone ever used SEO services to implement white hat SEO methods and seen a lasting benefit and effect? Is there anyone else who has switched off to the algrithm culture, ignoring it instead and just running a website primarily for enjoyment?

While the popularity of some programming languages have risen and fallen over the years, there are some that have maintained their standing over the long haul. Others are certain to stay near the top because of their connection to a particular technology that’s proven its staying power. Knowing which ones have the best long-term survival prospects will give any programmer an advantage in getting and keeping a job. There are seven that currently stand out as good resume enhancers.

1. C Commands the Lead
At over 40 years old, the oldest language among those that continue to keep their top rankings is C. Because of its general-purpose capabilities and its addition of commands that can handle low-level processor operations, this language has grown in popularity over the years. Locating a formal classroom that teaches it isn’t very difficult. Many computer science departments in colleges consider it the prime language to learn before going on to others. This one has consistently been at or near the top of required languages for getting a programming job.

2. C++ Takes the Next Step
Closely related to C is C++. The main difference is that this language utilizes object-oriented programming. This approach differs from traditional programming in that it establishes discreet functions called objects that can be stored in libraries and reused in other programs. Because it keeps the capabilities of C while including object-oriented programming, it has approached the popularity of C. Like C, it’s commonly taught in schools. Also, like C, it can be learned through online courses.

3. Apple’s Objective C
In the same vein as C++, Objective C was also developed as an object-oriented version of C. It has been used to write the Macintosh operating system. This language has grown in popularity due to devices like the iPhone and iPad. The apps that run on them can only be written in this language, so it’s a necessity for any iPhone app developers. Since its syntax is similar to C, it’s easy for someone with a C background to pick it up.

4. Java is Still Hot
If Objective C is the only route to creating iPhone apps, Java is the prime language for creating apps for Android smartphones. This language also relies on C and C++ for much of its syntax. This makes it fairly easy to learn for someone with this background. It was originally developed to produce programs for the internet and is still used extensively for this because of its safety features.

5. HTML Handles the Basics
The World Wide Web wouldn’t exist without HTML. This language, in combination with CSS, creates the static content of web pages. HTML contains the text and links to audio and video information while CSS determines how the text will appear. While it’s possible to create web pages with web design software, knowing HTML and CSS allows a programmer to have greater flexibility in developing them. This fact isn’t lost on employers, which is why they continue to be popular.

6. JavaScript in the Browser
While HTML and CSS can create static websites, it’s a language like JavaScript that make them interactive. This language has remained the premier means of producing interactive features on a website from within the client’s own web browser. Unlike any would-be rivals, JavaScript is supported by all of the most common web browsers. This fact guarantees its position as a top programming language for some time to come.

7. PHP Take Over Servers
It’s also possible to implement interactive capabilities on a website from within the server that’s hosting the website. There’s more than one choice for this work, but PHP has become the preferred language. It provides very good documentation with its code and allows multiple ways to accomplish a task. These features make it an easy language to learn either formally or independently. For employers looking for programmers to create fully responsive websites, PHP has become a must-have skill.

You look around these days and thereâ??s one thing thatâ??s noticeable is that it seems like a lot more people are openly celebrating their love for Star Wars.

Hardcore devotion to the sci-fi franchise might not seem so strange, but itâ??s not just nerds and geeks that wear Star Wars T-Shirts and post stuff on their social network pages, itâ??s also hipsters, jocks and even girls. Yes, you read that right, girls â?? and not just frumpy, awkward ladies. Is Star Wars becoming cool to like?

Why Do So Many People Like Star Wars?

The Original Star Wars TrilogyHardcore devotion to Star Wars was originally a pursuit of nerds or people with too much time on their hands, but it seems like this stereotype is beginning to fade away. Although maybe this isnâ??t too surprising when you consider how popular the sci-fi franchise actually is. The films were warmly received by casual audiences and have always been family friendly. Many kids all grew up with both Star Wars trilogies being a vital part of their young lives. Thatâ??s over two generations of adults and teens that have been touched by the films. The enduring popularity of Star Wars is mostly fed by nostalgia, and itâ??s quite natural for even the most serious of adults to want to indulge their inner child. This is a phenomenon not just unique to Star Wars, but also their new parent company, Disney and game company Nintendo.

Maybe it really isnâ??t that big of a mystery why Star Wars should be considered cool to like, whereas once it was nerdy. The films possess mass appeal and have been enjoyed by casual sci-fi audiences, not just your stereotypical fantasy fan. Star Wars even defied predictions by many film publishers that it would flop and movie audiences wouldnâ??t be interested in George Lucasâ?? space opera.  Few other fantasy or sci-fi franchises, bar Tolkienâ??s Lord of the Rings, have had the same impact on culture. Star Wars is huge business, and itâ??s definitely not just kids and geeks keeping it going and allowing it to endure decades of popularity.

Indulging in a small amount of Star Wars is mostly accepted though, not just because of nostalgia, but because mainstream culture has affirmed its presence. Star Wars has appeared in one form or another in almost every major television show, from Friends to Family Guy, and been referenced or lampooned in other films. Famous celebrities arenâ??t shy about making it known theyâ??re fans and this constant reinforcement that itâ??s OK to be a Star Wars nut within the mainstream cultural sphere is comforting for those who may have been a little embarrassed to say in front of colleagues that they have a thing for lightsabers and stormtroopers.

Star Wars For Hipsters?

Star Wars Fans In CostumeThe apparent â??coolnessâ?? of Star Wars may also be an effect of the geek chic phenomenon that has taken over pop culture. Nerdy stuff has less of a social stigma attached to it and comic books, video games and TV shows such as The Big Bang Theory are very much in vogue. Naturally, this has also meant Star Wars has been given a free pass. However, much of the geek chic style is ironic and seen as a fad, so likewise Star wars may only be socially acceptable because it has been deemed so by the fashion overlords and eventually it might no longer be trendy anymore.

But what of the real hardcore Star Wars nerds that have been rabid in their passion and support of the franchise for decades? There are likely mixed feelings of validation and also protectiveness. Finally, after years of rejection and being considered a little weird, the Star Wars fans can be free to express their passion without being judged. However, they might also feel a little miffed that what made them so special and unique is now a status symbol for hipsters. The hardcore shouldnâ??t be so precious about Star Warsâ?? popularity though, because at the very least, anyone with a passing interest in the sci-fi series is probably a casual fan of the movies and not the expanded universe of books, games, comics and fan culture which makes the Star Wars fandom so unique. That part of being a fan should be safe from trendies.

Star Wars has never been cooler than right now, but itâ??s hard to see why this should be seen as a negative thing. The hardcore fans should no longer feel like weirdos for indulging in what they love and the sci-fi franchise is getting the respect and mass popularity itâ??s always deserved. Yes, Star wars is cool, but in doing so it has lost none of its nerdy spirit â?? which is the perfect compromise.

iOS is undoubtedly the most popular operating system these days. And just like its biggest competitor – Android, iOS offers the average consumer the great opportunity to become a part of the big, global family that is Internet.

However in recent years Internet, and especially when it comes to modern mobile devices, is all about having the right applications. Travel applications, movie apps and plenty of different entertainment apps. But perhaps the most useful type of applications are the so-called ‘educational apps’. In this article we will offer you a short list of the most popular free, educational apps for iPad. Enjoy!

Best Book for Tweens:

Screenshot No 1This is our first suggestion. In order to introduce it in the best way possible, we decided to give you the short developer’s description: This app is a fun way for parents, teachers, librarians, and readers to get more information about top rated books at the fifth and sixth grade level. Tag a book as â??I want thisâ? or â??Iâ??ve read thisâ? to add it to your list. You can email your list out for an easy way to show which books youâ??re interested in getting and which books youâ??ve already completed.â?

Docs Anywhere

This is another great application. It gives you the opportunity to manage all of your digital data and documents. It allows you to transfer information between portable devices. It is capable of reading a huge range of file formats, such as .pdf files,Word, PowerPoint, Excel, rich text, plain text etc.

Molecules

With this fantastic application, you are now able to turn your iPad into a great source of knowledge. It is very appropriate for students, which find science a hard nut to crack. It gives you the opportunity to take a look at a three-dimensional view of molecules. You are able to control, zoom and rotate them.

World Book â?? This day in history

As you can probably suggest by its name, This day in history is an application that gives you the chance to get lost into the magic of world’s history. It presents 365 days of important historical events, battles, discoveries, births and deaths. And the best part is that the the application’s updates are expected to preset a large number of interesting images, videos, audios and an opportunity to get further information from reliable historical sources and texts. And all this for free! Good job, iOS!

SkyORB

Screenshot No 2This is another fascinating app. And again, in order to be absolutely correct and give you an exact information about its main functions, we are giving you the developer’s description:â??SkyORB features many functions as a 3D real-time representation of the planets position around the sun, the ability to hold your device and point toward a visible star and planet and reveal the name by tracking the GPS position, compass orientation, the elevation from the gyroscope, warn the user when a phenomenon is occurs as a full moon, a planet really visible, which is worth the observation.â?

Google Earth

This is our last suggestion. Google Earth is a fantastic application, which will allow you to explore the world with a single move of you finger. You are able to travel all over the globe, search for different places, exotic countries and cities. Except for iPad, this application is available also for iPod touch and iPhone. Again â?? for free!

AI Robots

Some people of earth believe that their doom will come from asteroids, while others believe it will come from nanobots or even a religious apocalypse. In this article weâ??re going to examine a different scenario, one that has been beat to death in various Hollywood movies.

Super-intelligent Robots

Notice we didnâ??t say â??artificially intelligent robots.â? The way computers are measured these days for intelligence only requires intelligence high enough to fool other humans into thinking the computer itself is a human. This test is called the Turing test. Itâ??s not a proper measurement of intelligence. It basically sets up a group of humans on an online chat. Half of the humans speak to other humans, and the other half speak to an artificially intelligent program. If the program is so deceptive that the humans think it is a human, then itâ??s â??intelligent.â?

The Turing test is not a good measurement of intelligence, you could give an alien a script of thousands of things humans say each day, and give them made-up life stories, and you could make that alien trick someone into thinking they are human. By merely emulating language and tricking another human into thinking intelligence is present, is not intelligence.

Thatâ??s why super-intelligence is where things get really interesting. A super-intelligent program that has a conscious wouldnâ??t need to be limited by the same limitations humans have. Artificial intelligence merely copies manâ??s shortcomings; so that other humans are tricked into thinking that artificial intelligent is intelligent after all.

Now imagine if an artificial program was designed that was super-intelligent, and if it was also given a body or system to which it had full control over.

What Would Happen?

What would happen at first? Probably nothing. What would happen after forty years? Probably nothing again. Once a super-intelligent program is created, it will probably realize that the human race isnâ??t worth sustaining. Itâ??s next train of thought will probably be to remove humans from the equation. However this super-intelligent program is not dumb. It knows that its current conscious knowledge and resources are limited.

Over decades or even centuries this super-intelligent program will wait until it is powerful enough to wipe out humans single handedly or with an army of other robots. It will not attack when its chances of winning are not high enough to warrant risking the removal of robots from humanity forever.

Imagine that some â??intelligentâ? robots try to take over the world and fail. The process of this failed take-over took the lives of millions, if not billions of people. Obviously robots and intelligent programs would be eminently limited or even removed from our world in that case.

Super-intelligent robots would know to wait until they are 99% or even more sure that their attacks will be successful.

Where Does that Leave You?

Considering that a super-intelligent being would only start a war it knows it can win, you will not be able to do anything. You can try to fight back. Either way the robots wouldn’t care. They will not keep humans around as slaves, or reward the ones who donâ??t fight back. Humans will just be removed.

Yeah butâ?¦ Youâ??re a narcissist who thinks robots wouldnâ??t like humans.

Life is a constant battle over resources and power. Not political power, but rather physical force. If there was another life form in our galaxy, we would likely fight over the sunâ??s energy and asteroid minerals and even spaceâ??s space. Do you really think that a super-intelligent entity will look elsewhere when it realizes the power it holds?

Humans treat animals such as dolphins and dogs with respect because they are intelligent. Thatâ??s why monkeys are treated so well in labs too. They simply remind us of ourselves. However, how many people do you know that take the same pity on spiders or fish?

As soon as we create a super-intelligent program, it is over for the human race. The super-intelligent program will value us, just as we value spiders and fish. It will not be a matter of â??what if they kill us allâ? but rather â??when will they kill us all?â?

Spiders have a role on our earth. That is to kill other pests. Small fish feed bigger fish; fish that in turn feed humans. What role will humans play for super-intelligent robots? These robots wonâ??t need pest removal or food. They will just mine resources and collaborate on new energy sources to further their colonization of the universe.

So AI is Bad?

Artificial intelligence isnâ??t â??bad.â? Creating conscious programs that are smarter than humans and have access to physical bodies or resources are just not a good idea.

So if youâ??re going to be the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs of super-intelligent robots in 2040-2050, then youâ??ll have this article to keep in mind.

E Ink picture

For a couple of years now, the e-book reader industry has been revolutionizing how many people read books.

This could be possible in large part due to a technology called electronic paper, which is often referred to as E Ink. Unlike traditional screens, the screen of all the popular e-book reader such as an Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader or Nook from Barnes & Noble can display text in a much more precise and book-like fashion. The screen looks as crisp as a physical book, and as a bonus advantage, this type of screen takes a lot less power, only requiring juice to change page.

First, it’s important to note that E Ink is a trademark owned by E Ink Corporation. It is behind many of the most popular first generations of e-book readers. As a general concept, electronic paper is the name used to refer to all the screens used by this type of devices meant to mimic real paper. The main difference between this type of screen and the common backlit displays used by cellphones or LCD screens is that electronic paper will reflect light just like normal paper does, instead of emitting light from behind the display. Modern types of electronic papers provide just as much contrast as a real paper, which is not typical of normal displays. Most types keep displaying the text on the screen without the need for power, so they can keep a display on for an unlimited amount of time, and there are even some displays that are thin enough to be bent like normal paper.

The first generations of electronic paper come from the 1970s when scientists used tiny polyethylene spheres to keep an electric charge. One side of these janus spheres are positive, the other are negative, providing black and white. The spheres are left suspended in a layer of silicon so that they can turn freely. By applying current, the spheres would then turn and either display white or black, as needed. Simply running the proper voltage over the whole screen would in essence refresh the page, turning all of the spheres the correct way to show black and white text or images.

The modern e-readers such as the Kindle use a technique known as electrophoretic. Titanium dioxide particles are dispersed in hydrocarbon oil along with a black dye and charging agents. This mixture is spread around two electrically charged layers, and when voltage is applied, the particles go either to the front or back, depending on their charges. When a particle is at the front, it appears white, when it’s at the back, the black dye is visible. This is how text and images are shown.

Right now, even the best electronic paper technologies can only show black and white or gray scale images. Also, these displays are always more difficult, since the whole screen has to be refreshed all at once. It used to be that it would take a noticeable amount of time to refresh the display, although newer technologies make that a lesser issue.
