Features

In addition to letting you locate your phone on a map, send it a message, or cause it to make a noise like with Find my iPhone, this app also sends you your phone’s last location before its battery dies. Furthermore, it has a security lookout which lets you know if malicious processes are detected on your device. On my phone, it indicated that I am jailbroken which makes it possible for “malicious code to run on your device that it would normally be protected from.”

With the premium version of the app, which costs $2.99 a month, you can also be alerted when any theft activity is detected (like having your SIM removed, losing connectivity, or being put on airplane mode.)

Mission Accomplished

In addition to all of the features above, this app also backs up your contacts and makes them available for download from Lookout.com. Find my iPhone does the same thing, but it doesn’t let you download your backed up contacts.

Room to improve

I highly doubt that this app will ever detect “malicious” processes on an iDevice. For an app to be able to do that, the device would have to be jailbroken for it to pull device process information in.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for an app that will alert you of possible theft activity with your phone, then this is the one to do it with (for $2.99 a month). Other than that, Lookout is basically a free app that will tell you when it’s time to update your iOS version and other similar but obvious things.

Features

This app not only allows you to protect your browsing history and bookmarks with a password, but also manage media downloads. For example, if you want to download an audio file, document, image, zip, or video, it’s a breeze with this app. After clicking on a download link, the media begins to download into your folders.

In addition to having a great download manager which allows for simultaneous downloads (with the premium version), this app also supports full screen mode.

Mission Accomplished

For a free app, Private Browser Free does a pretty good job. It has a lot of features and even allows for pausing and restarting downloads.

Room to improve

Although Private Browser Free has a lot of great features, the user interface isn’t the best. Furthermore, a lot of users are reporting having their media lost due to recent updates.

Conclusion

There are many other private browsing apps for the iPhone out there. Don’t like “Private Browser Free” mislead you into thinking it’s the best free one out there just due to its name. A quick search on the App Store shows that there’s other apps out there that do private browsing much better. Apps like Aquari for example allow for setting up a “decoy” password which goes to regular content when given to someone that asks for it.

Features

This app lets teachers, parents, and students connect via a simple system. Teachers for example can give positive “stickers” to their students, such as being on task, participating, and working hard. Parents in return see these stickers, as do the students. There are also “needs work” stickers such as being off task, talking out of turn, unprepared. These stickers are all referred to as “bubbles,” but I think it would be more intuitive to name them stickers since that’s what they virtually represent.

Teachers can also take photos of classroom moments and share it with parents, as well as message parents directly. The other feature I noticed in this app was the ability to take attendance.

Mission Accomplished

I must say what a great looking app! That’s where the good things about ClassDojo seem to start and end however.

Room to improve

While this app seems like a really great idea, I cannot imagine having used it in elementary school or anyone (including teachers, parents, and students) having any user for it. As far as I’m concerned it is a complete and utter gimmick.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for an educational app for teachers, students, and parents, skip past this one. It’s nothing more than a gimmick.

Gameplay

In this game you have to tap on four different colored tiles in order to match them. Every time a tile is tapped on, it switches colors. A red tile will switch to yellow, which will switch to blue, which will switch to green, which will switch to red.

The game starts off easy but in later levels, which there are 60 of in total, there are special tiles which change multiple tile colors with one tap. Since each level gives the player a limited amount of taps, the challenge is to pick a color that requires the least changing of squares to match.

Mission Accomplished

This game has plenty of challenging levels that will keep you on your puzzle solving toes. The game mechanics are also very unique, and this puzzle gives you brain in a different sort of situation. Not to mention that there’s also obstacles in this game and that it’s easy to get into and hard to put down.

Room to improve

The background music, as well as the graphics and story, aren’t the best around. Although this game has a creative concept, it puts many potential players off with its unsatisfactory audio and graphic style.

Punchline

It may not look shiny but it is one of the best functional puzzles out there.

Conclusion

If you don’t care what a game looks like, but you just want to play a challenging and rewarding puzzle, then this is the game for you.

Features

I’m not sure what the benefit of using this free app would be over using free apps such as the ones provided by BodyBuilder.com or Fitocracy.com. Unlike this app, those alternatives have beautiful interfaces with matching functionality.

When you first open Custom Fit you can pick from three goals “loss fat,” “build muscle” and “increase strength.” I’m not really sure what “loss fat” means, but I’ll assume that it has something to do with “fat loss.” Then you go on to pick whether you want to work on one, two, or three body parts. Mind you, if you want to get a workout that lasts longer than 30 minutes, involves more than two body parts, or increases strength, you’ll have to buy the full version for $1.99.

After choosing what sort of workout you’re looking for, the “workout plan” you get will consist of a few categories with various exercises in them. The instructional exercise videos have  no voiceover explaining how to complete the exercise. There’s not even a textual version of this information to look at.

Other than the exercise planner which just spits out a list of exercises for the muscles you pick, this app also has a progress track which tracks various body measurements daily as you input them. It also has a workout customizer that lets you basically build a list of exercises by writing them in, along with the amount of sets, repetitions, and time they should take.

Mission Accomplished

In addition to providing users with a very shoddy exercise planner and body tracker, this app also comes with its own inadequate diet logger which could be replaced by using something as the Net Diary app.

Room to improve

The information content of Custom Fit makes it very clear that the developer or the team hasn’t had much experience with working out or teaching others on the matter, let alone much experience on the matter of developing apps. The user interface is far from attractive but even if it looked great there wouldn’t be much content to gain from the app in its current state.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to start exercising, or you’re already at an advanced level, then it would be a good idea to pass this app up. Don’t even think about buying the “full version” for $1.99 if you haven’t fully seen how short the most basic features you’d want fall short in the free version.

Gameplay

In this game you guide a spaceship left and right to insure that it doesn’t hit the sides of the level, or the incoming platforms. The control mechanism is powered by tapping anywhere on the screen to change directions.

So when you first start out for example, the ship begins to fly straight. Tapping anywhere on the screen will guide the ship to the left. If you don’t tap the screen again, it will hit the side of the level and the game will end.

As you progress through levels you gain points. Flying through powerups gains even more points.

Mission Accomplished

This game has four difficulty modes which can be unlocked by earning enough points (by getting farther in the game) in the easy modes.

The Good

The graphics and soundtrack are really impressive.

Room to improve

While some may be able to enjoy the game, as some of the reviews on iTunes indicate, others as myself do not like the control mechanism at all. I for one think that it’s confusing that no matter where you tap on the screen, the spaceship just changes directions. This isn’t to say I don’t like challenging games.

I’ve unlocked Super Hexagonest in the game “Super Hexagon” for example with no frustration. In Super Hexagon, tapping on the left moved the main object left, and tapping on the right side moved it to the right. This game doesn’t work like that, and that’s why it frustrates me. I would expect at least the option to pick from another control mechanism.

Also every few times that you begin the level again, you have to watch a video advertisement. Ads can be removed with an in-app purchase of course.

Conclusion

If you like games like Resogun (on PS4) or arcade games, then giving this game a try is worth a shot. However, I wouldn’t personally recommend it.

The Ebola app has four sections of information about Ebola. The first section shows a list of countries with Ebola patients, the amount of cases, and deaths.

The second section is all Ebola news, while the third section is information about the Ebola disease ranging from transmission to treatment. The last section is a list of world health organization offices and their contact information.

The Good

This app’s color scheme is flat and consistent with iOS 7. It’s also free, which is always a perk.

The Bad

Even though this app doesn’t show adds, is free, and doesn’t sell in-app purchases, it isn’t too valuable. A simple Google search would bring up as much information as this app does, and without taking up any space on your phone.

Room to improve

The bottom section buttons aren’t very clear. There’s no text underneath the icons so it’s hard to tell what tapping on each section will do before tapping on it first. Also, the icons at the bottom take up a lot of space when they could be a bit smaller and have textual name counterparts.

Punchline

If I were you, I would avoid Ebola App like a plague.

Conclusion

If you have any questions about Ebola or its status around the world, don’t get this app. Just Google your question and you can save yourself the hassle.

FlyInStyle is an app that in theory makes it easier to find great stores, deals, and places to make your time spent in an airport “flyby.” However, based on my use of this app I came to find that it isn’t so helpful.

There isn’t’ information for every airport within this app, and when there is it’s just an article or two about the airport. Essentially this app is a combination of a hard to use (and look at) interface, with articles that aren’t really informative or in-depth

The Good

The only good thing about this app is the idea behind it: such as being able to add offers to your bookmarks, finding deals at airports, sharing finds with friends, etc.

Room to improve

Many more airports should be added to this app, and the information regarding the stores should be more informative. A directory of stores or at least a map would really help out. Seems to me like there isn’t a lot of information for any of the airports listed on this app, and also like nothing gets updated on a regular basis.

Conclusion

If you want to find your way around an airport to get great deals or not get bored, then don’t download this app. It will distract you from looking around and finding things by sight vs. reading non-informative articles about the airport and a few of its stores.
