Hollywood has a tendency to give the impression that plenty of very unlikely or impossible things happen all the time, as shown by shows like Mythbusters that have proven that cars that roll over tend not to explode into giant fireballs, among other things.

When it comes to computers and the things they can allow you to do, however, many movie writers use them in much the same way as they use wizards – to explain away anything implausible.  Yes, any time you see something that doesn’t really make sense in an action or heist movie, it is often explained with a lazy â??he can do it because he knows computersâ? or â??he hacked itâ?. Here are some things movie makers would have us believe a computer can do:

Communicate With Extraterrestrials!

We all saw Independence Day. Apple actually paid to have the Macbook that was used to blow up the aliens as a major plot device in that movie, in a colossal act of product placement, however there is literally no way that this could happen. The Mac in question would not even be able to communicate properly with an iPad from today, let alone the technology of an advanced alien race with the capability to travel to and take on Earth.

Computers are limited by languages, network configurations and all kinds of other things that would prevent you from being able to easily interfere with a network they haven’t been designed to interact with, let alone one that their designers and programmers have no understanding of.

Completely and Irreparably Destroy Your Identity!

While it was made back in the days when not everyone was that familiar with the internet, The Net starring Sandra Bullock sure did make it look like a scary prospect. Based around the idea of identity theft, Sandy’s life was completely ruined by some vengeful hackers, to the point where her own family somehow didn’t know who she was. Yes, identity theft online can be markedly inconvenient, but this, and other movies that use identity fraud as a major plot device, implies that we all only exist as data.

Had they just sort of hacked her MySpace page (this was before Facebook, of course!) and posted some embarrassing stuff or used her credit card number to order a lot of pizzas, this might have been a believable tale of hacking and identity abuse, but then it probably wouldn’t have been very exciting!

Steal Loads of Money Without Anyone Noticing!

Financial tech is super easy for anyone with a bedroom level of hacking ability to get into, and once you’re in there, you can remove as much money as you like from the one big database table with all the money in into your account without anybody tracing it. That’s what the movies would have us believe, anyway! In movies like Swordfish, people have pulled off ridiculous financial crimes simply by being â??elite hackersâ?. Elite hackers, however, are real, and yet crimes like this aren’t happening all the time. How is this? Hacking is used in movies like The Doctor’s sonic screwdriver â?? it doesn’t matter how it works, it just kind of sorts things out.

World War 1 Interactive by Touchzing Media is a book and an app combined into one about the history of WWI.

I’ve downloaded ebooks in the past, as well as apps, but this is the first time I’ve tried a book combined into a fully interactive app. I must say that I was impressed, as it was a lot more fun than just being a book where you can only flip the pages over.

When you open up the app you are presented with an introductory video giving you some historic clips of WWI, then you are invited to enter the app and start at the introduction. First of all I was impressed with the layout of the material in the introduction, which was an overview mixed with an interface where you can navigate around with ease.

There is a central timeline that runs through WWI events based on the year. If you click on one of the dates, events are then shown in order for that particular year. For example, if you click on ‘1916 – Inside the Trenches’ ten sub-categories then pop up. Then if you select ‘Battle of the Somme’ for example details of this event are presented to you. On a typical page there is a write up about the event. The text has been adapted from Wikipedia but is presented very nicely in a concise format. On the right hand side there will be a picture or video footage of the event. As well as this, information as to when it happened, where it happened, the result of what happened and who was involved is shown.

One really neat thing is that you can increase or decrease the font size with the ‘A-‘ or ‘A+’ buttons. A back button takes you back out to the overview of the year selected where you can also select other years.

The developer has really taken the time to make sure that there is no confusion by the reader when reading the app book. In the introduction it is explained how to use the book and there is a ‘Home’ button to return to the introduction, a ‘multimedia’ button to view pictures, videos and speeches, and a ‘Help’ button. The help button really gives a simple but straighforward method for using the book for anyone confused.

Mission Accomplished

This book will give you a very good overview of WWI without overloading you with information. I can tell that the text has been adapted so as to present a clear, concise overview with pertinent information only. This is opposite to if you read through a lengthy academic paper which would give you a headache trying to look for relevant snippits of information.

I really like the layout of this app book as it really does look neat. Again, even though I like ebooks, an app book is more fun for sure, with the ability to show videos and play audio recordings.

The planning of the information within the app has been well thought out with events presented in clear cut categories running along a timeline. A good index is included and you can view events in an extended timeline view which is really neat.

Room to improve

I honestly can’t fault the layout of this app book and it does what it says in its description, it gives you an overview of events in WWI and there is some great material included in the book. The only suggestion I can make for a future update would be a weapons, aircraft & land vehicles section with write ups on various weapons used etc. That would be an interesting update for people like myself interested in the technical side of warfare. Just  a suggestion as the app book is fine as it is.

Conclusion

A really well laid out and interesting book giving a full overview of WWI. Fun to use with interective multimedia and very easy to navigate around in. I certainly was absorbed into the book, more than I would have if it were just text in an ordinary ebook. An immersive read with great footage of WW1 included.

We all enjoy the mainstream games that often have millions of players, such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, but to truly call yourself a gamer, you have to get into the lesser-known indie games that generally never received the funding they needed to gain popularity. Popularity does not always guarantee engaging gameplay, it just means that the company that produced it was able to attract enough attention to it to cause a mob of people to gain interest.

Weâ??ve seen this happen with World of Warcraft: it gained an immediate cult following because its producer, Blizzard Entertainment, is well known in the gaming industry. In my opinion, however, the gameplay is quickly redundant and it lacks a storyline that defines your character from start to finish. With indie games, the producers, although they may be on a very low budget, are often very creative and able to create engaging universes that keep users playing them well after the average â??die offâ? time of games.

Cradle

Cradle is a must for sci-fi lovers: it takes place in almost a dream world in a desert in Mongolia. It is a first person game that follows a quest storyline and free movement throughout the world. The protagonist (you) meets a cyborg woman who is in need of help. The player has to help the mechanical woman by repairing her lost functions. The two of them together are faced with the task of revealing a mystery surrounding an abandoned entertainment park. This game features puzzles that require critical thinking, hidden objects that players can hunt down, intense graphics and a storyline that changes based on the decisions that you make throughout the game. You can later repeat the game to discover the alternative endings.

StarDrive

For those who enjoy space-based games, StarDrive is a combination of action and strategy. The final goal is to establish a space empire. Players start out with only one planet and limited resources. Their objective is to design ships and build colonies, eventually moving on to discover other worlds. The most prominent feature of the game is its detailed ship design system. The player can customize every aspect of the ship, such as where each part goes using what are called ship modules. Ships’ effectiveness will change depending on the combinations of modules used, encouraging the player to experiment with different ideas. Players can also customize the race of their character by changing traits from many different categories. These include physical and socioeconomic traits, and traits that are related to your character’s life and traditions. This game allows for a unique experience, as you can design your character’s story yourself, then play it through.

Digital: A Love Story

Digital: A Love Story is definitely different from any game I’ve ever seen. The majority of the game takes place on online bulletin boards, responding to and sending messages to non-player characters (NPC). It also involves cracking into online systems, downloading files and eventually developing a romance interest. The game has a linear story, and the protagonist you play is a girl named Amie. It starts out a little slow, but eventually takes you to other cities and becomes almost an action/adventure type game. You are tasked with saving peoples’ lives, reviving someone using previously unseen technology, and gaining access to a restricted underground library.

prison breakMost of us would be too scared to actually risk a prison break attempt. With increased surveillance and security technology, it canâ??t be an easy feat. Nowadays, one might think an escape from justice is more likely to take place in the court room with the help of lawyers in well-cut suits.

Nonetheless, here some daring escapes in recent history.

The man who dug his way out with a spoon

The most recent outbreak on our list was from Moscow’s Matrosskaya Tishina prison, which involved a creative use of cutlery. On the 7th of May, 2013, Oleg Topalov escaped by breaking into the ventilation shaft in the ceiling above his cell, presumably using nothing but a spoon.

After finding himself on the roof, it was simply a hop, skip and a jump to freedom. From the two-story cell block he leapt onto the main fence, and then out the prison grounds.

Topalov was charged with the murder of two people, and illegal arms trafficking as part of an organised gang. He now faces an additional four years in prison because of the escape attempt. That is if he can be caught again.

The seven buffoons

On December 13, 2000, seven convicts on death row somehow managed to muscle their way out of a Texan prison against all odds. While weâ??ve come to expect ingenuity and creativity from prison escape stories, the main strategy of the â??Texas Sevenâ? seemed to be to point to something behind guards and say, â??Hey, whatâ??s over there,â? and then subdue them with makeshift weapons. Theyâ??d then bind and gag them, and of course take their uniforms.

Sounds pretty much what youâ??d expect from a made-for-TV movie with little to no imagination. Nonetheless, it worked. Till one of the biggest man hunts in American history, and a little help from Americaâ??s Most Wanted, landed all seven back in jail a few weeks later. Today, one of the men has committed suicide, one has been executed, and the remaining five are still on death row.

The Mexican wave of escapees

More than 130 convicts escaped out of a Mexican prison into a town bordering on Texas in September 2012. Thatâ??s a whopping fifth of the Piedras Negras prison population. They escaped through a 21 foot long tunnel and into a neighbouring property.

Amazingly, this was not the biggest break out in recent Mexican history. In December 2010, 153 inmates escaped from a prison in the northern city of Nuevo Laredo, also near Texas. 41 Guards were charged with aiding the inmates in their escape.

The man who flew off into the sunset. Twice.

In 2001, facing a 30 year sentence for killing an armoured truck driver, Pascal Payet clearly had had enough of the Luynes prison in France. So he organised for some buddies of his on the outside to hijack a helicopter and give him a lift to a place better suited to his tastes.

Two years after being picked up from the roof, Payet returned, again via stolen chopper, to evacuate a few friends still on the inside. This second insult was possibly too much for the prison authorities to bear. They managed to recapture him, and for the next few years, the daring Frenchman was transferred to a new prison about every three months so as to keep him from another escape.

That is until July 2007, when on Bastille Day â?? a national French holiday celebrating the storming of the infamous prison â?? a helicopter carrying four masked men landed on the roof of Grasse prison in Southeast France Day. And Pascal Payet was never heard of again.

If you were facing a long prison sentence, would you actively try to find a way to escape? Nowadays, with all the advances of security control room operations, and how much more difficult it is to simply disappear in the outside world, most people would probably think twice. Except for the daring few with nothing left to lose.

Famous tent photo image

Tents go far back with mankind.

I can even think of a few references from Biblical times.  Several Old Testament prophets resided with their families in tents.  Saint Paul himself was a tent maker.  We may have come a long way since then when you think about transportation, technology, or medicine, but tents continue to be a valued form of shelter.

Military

Historically, the U.S. Department of Defense has had many uses for tents.  At most sites you can see a tent for sleeping, a tent for dining, and even a tent for recreation (just to name a few).  Iâ??m sure they favor tents because they are a portable source of shelter, quick to set-up and take down, which is essential when your unit needs to be mobile.

Spiegeltents

Have you ever heard of a Spiegeltent?  If not, Iâ??m confident youâ??ll find them just as charming as the rest of us do.  Originating in Belgium during the 19th century, Spiegeltents are essentially mobile dance halls.  Back in the day they would move throughout the countryside to areas without a dance hall to be used in conjunction with county fairs.  They often featured glass and mirror décor.

Believe it or not, there are still a few around today.  They are mostly used for art festivals around the world, but you can find a few fixed Spiegeltents in the United States.

Oktoberfestâ??s Beer Tents

The popular event Oktoberfest has also traditionally utilized tents.  Beer tents are temporary structures, only used during the festival, and range in size and function.  Tents feature different brews and atmospheres; some are friendly family, some display artwork, and some are themed around something specific, such as oxen.

Circus Tents

Tell me: who doesnâ??t think about the red and yellow â??big topâ? when the topic of historical tents comes up?  Anyone who has seen Water for Elephants surely does.  Portable tents were perfectly suited to traveling circuses because they moved from town to town constantly.  In fact, when Americans started looking and moving westward, circuses packed up their tents and went with them via the railroad.

J. Purdy Brown is credited with using the first circus tent, which was made of canvas, in 1825.  Up to that point the most common structure circuses used was made of wood and had to be torn down and transported every time they relocated.  It doesnâ??t take a genius to realize that those crews were thrilled with the advent of the circus tent.  But more than being simple to assemble, these tents were also inexpensive and easy to transport.

Initially circus tents were held up by a single pole in the center.  As time went on more poles were implemented to accommodate higher bleachers.  And while early circus tents were small, housing just one ring and seating a couple of hundred, they came to seat thousands and cover several rings.  Large circuses would even have multiple tents to provide their customers with a handful of entertainment options.

The Weasley Tent

And who can forget the tent the Weasleyâ??s borrowed from Perkins in Harry Potter?  A bit like Mary Poppinâ??s handbag, its interior is much bigger than it looks from the outside.  In fact, it even has bathrooms and bunks much like a small home.  The Weasley family used it during the memorable Quidditch World Cup.  Later, Hermoine sets it up for herself, Harry, and Ron with a simple â??Erectoâ? spell when theyâ??re hunting for He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Namedâ??s horcruxes.

By +Jessica Christensen

Jessica has a bit of personal experience with this topic since her family creates their own history in recreational tents when camping.  She has also seen history created for a few close friends in the tents from companies providing wedding rentals; Utah locals often utilize tents for weddings and receptions during pleasant seasons.  But while sheâ??s not roughing it outdoors or celebrating a friendâ??s nuptials, Jessica spends much of her time constructing riveting articles such as the one youâ??ve just finished reading!  Follow her on Google + to read on.

One of the main reasons why the iPhone and iPad are so popular is the large number of apps available for iOS devices. The slogan “there is an app for that” is very fitting since there truly is an app for almost anything you can think of. It is not surprising then that coffee connoisseurs have a plethora of apps to choose from the iTunes store. Here are 5 of the most amazing apps that for coffee lovers.

Instant Barista

Instant barista is an app that truly lives up to its name. With a few taps on the screen, the app will instantly help you become a barista with access to over 70 different recipes. Besides helping you make coffee drinks like a professional, the app also dedicates a section to latte art and a brew timer for steeping different kinds of tea.

Coffee Order

Do you dread the days when you have to make the coffee run and can’t remember who ordered what? Then the Coffee Order app definitely deserves a spot in your iPhone. No matter where you go, a chain coffee-shop or an indie one, the app has a range of options to choose from so that you never forget anything in an order. Get your boss’s ‘Grande double extra dry skinny no whip vanilla latte’ prefect every time.

Beanhunter

For those who prefer indie coffee shops to the corporate chains, the Beanhunter app is invaluable. Most corporate coffee chains have their own apps with in-built store locators. Beanhunter lets you find independent coffee shops in your area and check out user ratings and reviews. With a list that boasts over 8000 coffee shops from across the world, Beanhunter is a massive hit for coffee connoisseurs who also love to travel.

Coffee Scales

With temptation everywhere, it can be quite difficult to control your calorie intake. Being health-conscious is not an easy thing; no matter how hard you try, it seems impossible to keep a track of every calorie. This is especially true for those who love to drink coffee. Unless you are drinking good ol’ fashioned black coffee, your cuppa is more likely to resemble a cup filled with dessert. Coffee scales lets you see exactly how many calories are in that drink of yours. Simple input your order and the app will calculate how many calories the drink has and how much caffeine you will be getting from it.

CoffeeGuru

CoffeeGuru is undoubtedly the best app out there for hardcore coffee lovers. Although its list of coffee shops is not as extensive as Beanhunter, CoffeeGuru does focus more on coffee shops that serve fair trade coffee. The best feature of the app though has to be the ‘Flavor Wheel’. With a wide range of tastes and aromas to choose from, the Flavor Wheel provides you with a great set of adjectives to describe your coffee. In addition to the coffee-shop locator and flavor wheel, the app also features a mini coffee brewing guide.

Final Fantasy Screenshot image

For a number of years now there have been RPG games for consoles and computers, many of them breaking new ground in this genre in one way or another.

There are certainly some games that stand out more than others when it comes to these styles of games, earning themselves a place among the greats which will be remembered by fans for years to come.

Final Fantasy VII

The Final Fantasy series has been a staple in RPG gaming for a long time now, and this particular installment is particular beloved among its fans. Perhaps one of the best things about this game is the unique cast of characters, specifically Cloud, who is the protagonist battling his way towards the final showdown with Sephiroth. There is absolutely no doubt that this Final Fantasy game stands out in the minds of RPG fans as being one of the very best sequels to the original which was first released on the NES.

Another thing that makes Final Fantasy VII such a memorable and special RPG game is that it has aged very well. Despite the fact that there have been more recent installments with superior graphics, this game is still a great throwback to go through once in a while. For many fans it is not simply just a piece of video game nostalgia, but also a genuinely enjoyable RPG that has stood the test of time. At the time this game definitely gave something new to fans, and it remains as one of the greatest RPGs in the minds of many.

Fallout 3

There is absolutely no doubt that Fallout 3 is one of the best albeit depressing games to play through, with a kind of a magical charm that takes you into an entirely different apocalyptic nightmare of a world. With numerous quests that you can go through to kill the mutants that populate this baron wasteland, it really does create the correct overall atmosphere to really help you get into the spirit of the game. Between the amazing visual graphics and the radio which can be heard throughout the game, it is an authentic RPG experience to be sure.

Diablo II

This demon-slaying RPG is without a doubt one of the most immersive and comprehensive games in this genre ever created to date. Creating a legion of obsessed and basement-dwelling fans, Diablo II has a very long list of positive things which make it a very memorable game indeed.

Although this game genuinely challenges its players, that is part of the reason why it has earned a reputation for being such an enjoyable game which offers a wholly unique experience for even the most experienced RPG gamer. Even though Diablo II was released over ten years ago and has since had another sequel come out, it is still considered to be one of the 3 best RPG games of all time. With a variety of unique characters and a vast land to explore, this game takes you into an entirely different world which isnâ??t very easy to take yourself away from.
