Although this app is dubbed a game, it is really designed with studying in mind. You can study the worldâ??s country shapes, capitals, flags and location via seven different games in Geo World Deluxe.

Some of the most notable game-modes include FALL-N-CATCH, where you have to tap on the correct country falling among other colorful countries, LOCATIONS, where you have to find the location of the selected country on the map, and SHAPES, where you build a pile of countries using the ones you are asked for.

Mission Accomplished

This app teaches you flags, capitals, landmarks, state shapes, bordering states and locations of world-wide countries and USA states. On top of all of that functionality it also has great graphics and is fun to play.

Room to improve

It would be cool if you could challenge friends in real-time in this app. That way you could see who knows their countries best and it would also make studying more fun. Other than that, there’s nothing really bad about this app.

Conclusion

Whether youâ??re a child or an adult, a student or a country enthusiast, this is a great app to help you learn everything you need to know about the worldâ??s countries. Give this app a try for a dollar because it wonâ??t let you down.

Pac Man machinePac-Man is a game that started a revolution in arcade popularity. The addictively fun game, the loved Pac-Man character, and his evil ghost enemies has led to hundreds of variations of the Pac-Man game, and even Saturday morning cartoons dedicated to the power pellet eater.

No one really had high hopes for Pac-Man, but they were oh so wrong. Pac-Man became so popular in Japan that for the second time in history the government had to mint more coins due to the Pac-Man coin consuming arcade games. In the early 80’s, arcades in every mall and town center would have at least several Pac-Man games. The phenomenon of arcades became so popular that the public began to spend time and money on a regular basis to get their entertainment fix by playing the nearest Pac-Man arcade.

By 1981, the arcade game industry was fully functioning. Space invaders and asteroids were dominating the arcade scene and everyone wanted to test their skills in the local arcade. The infrastructure was there, as well as the customer base, everyone was looking for the next big game. The inventor of Pac-Man looked at a pizza with a slice missing and Pac-Man was born, or so the legend goes. Pac-Man was created by Midway at the same time of a Midway racing gaming called Rally X, and no one had hopes that Pac-Man would ever be as popular as Rally X. The Rally X game was thought to be the next big game for Midway, but Pac-Man was considered to be a novelty game that would never get any major popularity. However, when Pac-Man was released it blew up the arcade scene and everyone wanted to play this game. It was like nothing anyone had ever played before. Although it was quite similar to the Rally X game, it featured original music and sound effects that just were not like anything anyone had ever played before. It was originally called Puckman, but they decided to change it to Pac-Man because of the possible misuses associated with a name like Puckman.

The game featured the character Pac-Man gobbling dots while being pursued through a maze by ghosts. The changes in color between levels would give a sense of progression and success as each level was defeated. This became the biggest arcade game of all time. During the 1980’s, you would see an entire wall dedicated to Pac-Man at arcades, and they would be filled with people standing in line waiting for a chance to play! This little yellow guy became the biggest star in the world! Pac-Man was being carried outside of arcades, and found in grocery stores, Seven Elevenâ??s, and even in private business break rooms. This was one of the only games that actually made it into cartoons, cereal, lunch boxes, watches, clothing, and bed comforters. This was the beginning of a path that was later followed by other games which made a rise to popularity. It was like a blockbuster movie that began to take over the world. Pac-Man caused arcades to become hangouts where teenagers and college kids would spend hours hanging out and having fun while playing Pac-Man.

Pac Man ScreenshotIn 1981, America spent 20 billion quarters on arcades. The government actually stepped in to make hours reduced that arcades could stay open, and tried to set limits to how long customers could play on arcades. This caused a huge uproar. It suddenly became a status symbol of rebellion to play Pac-Man and other arcade games.

In 1982, Ms. Pac-Man was invented, but it was created by college students and not the original inventor. The president of Midway actually purchased the add-on board created by the college students, but they were confused about what to name the game. It was first thought that Mrs. Pac-Man was a wrong name choice and it could be offensive to single women. So they decided to name her Ms. Pac-Man to appease any concerns with political correctness. Her fame blew up, but she soon faded and was considered to be basically the same level of popularity as Pac-Man. Pac-Man eventually became less popular and faded into history, because people that learned how to really play the game were able to master it. Eventually, they became so good they could play for an hour off one quarter.

In addition, the home video game console exploded on to the scene, and this kept consumers in their homes and out of the arcades. People were so excited they preordered copies of Pac-Man from Atari, but Atari’s version of Pac-Man was a cheap knock off, and this was a major disappointment for some people. Yet, because they were playing it for free in their homes, people still loved the game! This began a market of knock off Pac-Man like games. Atari even defeated Magnavox in court over its knock of version. Baby Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, and others eventually faded into history. Yet, there are still Pac-Man fans to this day, and they are still buying the latest console versions of the Pac-Man games. Pac-Man has been translated into action adventure games, RPG games, and just about every genre of gaming there is.

In 1999, Pac-Man met Billy Mitchell, a man who owned his own hot sauce company. He walked into an arcade and played Pac-Man. Six hours later he played the entire game of Pac-Man, ate every power pellet, and actually beat the entire game! This was a record breaking feat, and it made him become a celebrity in the gaming community. There are very few gamers from the early 80’s that are still active in the gaming scene. Pac-Man has gone down in history as having made a mark on the 20th century. It is said that Pac-Man touched the lives of more people alive today than any other game in the history of mankind.

Screenshot of WWII app iconWhat I like about this app is that there is a great video intro with clear sound to get you into the mood of reading about the history of World War II. In the app there is a great world map, which you can use as a reference. You can see the western allies, Soviets & their allies and also the axis powers and their allies, detailing which territories they controlled. The app book opens with the choice of an events view or timeline view. Beginning with the ‘Roots Of The War’ and the rise of Adolf Hitler, you are then taken on a timeline journey through history, together with rich multimedia, such as sound, video and photos. You can click on either the photos, speeches or videos section to view specific groupings of multimedia.

I particularly liked the ‘Speeches’ section, such as listening to Winston Churchill’s famous ‘We shall fight them on the beaches’ speech. Listening to speeches back then, broadcast over old wirelesses, really gives you a spooky feeling that you are being taken back to that particular moment in time. You can view each stage of the war in detail. However, the information is in the form of succinct information that is easy to read. By far my personal favourite section of this app is the ‘Blitz’ section, as my grandfather’s house was blown up when he was working nights whilst manning an air-raid siren in Bath, England. I think that Britain is lucky that Hitler was off his rocker and decided to attack Russia, choosing to fight on several fronts, as the Nazis were very close to being able to invade Britain if they had concentrated their push in one direction.

Mission Accomplished

The whole app book is just lovely to read and interact with, as the navigation is so smooth. I love the two separate scrolling panels in the ‘Events’ view, where you can select a timeframe form the bottom scroller and then view events broken down even further detailed sections in the top scrolling panel. The app book is packed with interesting information, such as which strategic targets were bombed in the Battle of Britain and why. The written information is very nicely laid out, with clear titles for each paragraph or section of text. The editing is very nice as there is a clear topic sentence, introduction, main body and conclusion. With overview information laid out on the right hand side of each article. So, in a nutshell, the information in this app has been put together with care.

Conclusion

If you want to find out in detail about the events of WWII, you can’t go wrong with World War II Interactive. The app book is a delight to read, very well put together and just so much fun to interact with. Who needs paperbacks anymore when there are app books like this waiting to be read, and for a cheaper price too, and kinder to trees. An excellent app!

Features

This app allows you to translate every single imaginable proverb from Japanese into English. Each proverb has a literal translation, an English translation and an equivalent English translation. Some proverbs also have related proverbs that you might be interested in.

photo 1

Proverb text can be copy and pasted from this app. Whether you want to copy and paste the Japanese text or the English text, you’ll be glad to know you can do both. Not to mention that this app also lets you take notes on any proverb you’d like as well as bookmark proverbs.

If you take a look below at the two images you will see two description styles on the right side. The first image shows a full-screen description where the user has to tap on the “back” button to return to the sub-category of proverbs. In the second image you can see a half-screen description that still displays the sub-category.

For an extra $4.99 users can upgrade the audio reading of proverbs. This upgrade will also give the user fine-tune control over the voice that reads the proverb out and the speed of which that they read with.

Mission Accomplished

This app has a lot of Japanese proverbs! I don’t know the exact number but I do know that it’s over 1,200. Having a rough translation, a literal translation and an English interpretation for each proverb is really awesome as well.

Room to improve

The price. The price is really high. Obviously the developer spent a lot of time translating these proverbs but it doesn’t mean this app should cost $19.99. I’m sure people would rather just Google Japanese proverbs before dropping so much money on this app. The $4.99 voice add-on is just another slap in the face.

The price is all based on perspective though. When you consider that Googling proverbs only nets you with 100-200 Japanese proverbs, you’ll start to see the value of this app. Also when you consider print versions of this app costs $50, this app will stand out even more.

For me, it’s not worth it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth for other people. It’s a quality app and way cheaper than other alternatives. So if you need a dictionary like this and you have an iPad, you might as well purchase this app.

Conclusion

If you’re interested in finding Japanese proverb translations then I would just use Google. Sure, using Google for proverbs only gets you about 100-200 proverbs. If spending $19.99 on A Dictionary of Japanese Proverbs for iOS seems worth getting a library of 1,200+ Japanese proverbs, then it would be a good choice for your needs.

iCloud screenshot

The iCloud is Appleâ??s free data-syncing service that is also supported by windows machines and while it works pretty well, a lot of people have issues with its lack of options and of course the fact that you can only use it with an iPhone and on one PC. Read this guide on some great alternatives to iCloud.

Spotify

If you want to be able to access your library of music from wherever you are, iTunes is fine but with Spotify, you can not only download music for your playlist but you can also can choose to legally stream music that you donâ??t already own. That way you donâ??t have to use the storage of your phone up with music or pay to listen to the songs you want.

You can create a streaming playlist similar to the way YouTube playlists work so it makes it much easier. Please note that if you do not pay for the music you donâ??t technically own it but are instead being allowed access by paying for you Spotify subscription but if you are happy to stream for free and donâ??t mind not owning the music then Spotify is superior to iTunes. If you are already with iTunes, you can easily copy your entire existing library over to Spotify so you wonâ??t lose anything that you already own.

SugarSync

Sugarsync offers more space for a cheaper price than iCloud however; they do not offer a free service. If you donâ??t want to pay, obviously iCloud is the only choice but if you are willing to pay, SugarSync may be the better option because it gives you more features, such as the ability to delete photos and it is compatible to use with multiple computers as well as Windows and Android devices and also allows easy sharing.

The SugarSync iPhone app allows you to take photos that instantly upload to your cloud service so they are always backed up and available for you to access on any device.

Loom

Loom is similar to iCloud in that it is Mac only and you get 5 GB free with your account. You can pay to upgrade to 50GB or 250GB on a monthly basis. It is made for people who are especially serious when it comes to their photos.

When you add photos to your Loom library, it is automatically uploaded to the server and multiple versions are created in different sizes for extra security. If you delete a photo from your library it will remain on the loom server so if you have any secret photos youâ??d rather not keep on your phone then it works well for that. You can password protect with this app and loom now supports the new RAW format.

Zip Cloud

For $4.95 a month you get 75GB of storage space with Zip Cloud which is pretty decent. Put that up to $6.95 for unlimited storage and itâ??s hard to beat. This product is reliable, easy to use and it looks nice however it is pretty limited in features like the iCloud.

LiveDrive

LiveDrive is $6 per month for unlimited space and has a ton of features, plus the software is nicely designed. The only downside is that you can only use it one machine but if you only need the one computer then it is a good choice for you.

BackBlaze

This software offers unlimited storage for $5 per month making it the cheapest option but the software is not quite as nice to use, it restricts some files and itâ??s a bit slower. If all you want is cheap though then go for it.

Dropbox

Dropbox is a very well-known backup system, itâ??s very easy to use and to share files but itâ??s a little more expensive too. The company offers 2GB of free storage, with up to 18GB free available by uploading photos and referring other users (free or paid). Paid storage starts at $10 per month for 100GB of storage. It works on everything.

There is a wide plethora of different panels on the market that can be used to protect our phones.

Water damaged phone

Some of them are designed to mitigate the negative effects of occurring sudden contact with a hard surface under the effects of gravity; others rely on our ineptitude to keep our phones away from moisture so they are constructed in such a way that makes your phone completely water proof; for the cruder members of the readership, there are also all in one solutions and even though they don’t look very elegant, they ensure that your phone becomes almost indestructible.

Sadly, most of us don’t like using those special cases, mainly for aesthetic reasons, so we leave our devices to their inherent vulnerabilities, thinking that damage will never happen to us. You never even consider the possibility that you would be one of those people who would drop their handset in the toilet. Or in a puddle. Or in the swimming pool. Who would’ve thought that it’s a bad idea to hang around water while you’re checking your Facebook or tweeting about how nice it is to go for a swim in a hot summer day. Hence, many devices end up being tested under water and, quite naturally, fail the trial by water. But fear not because it’s not all lost. Even when things look quite dire, it’s not impossible to reverse some of the effects H2O has on your previous and expensive toys. Here’s what you should do in a desperate attempt to revive your phone after it’s been damaged by water.

Don’t panic!

I know it’s easy for me to say this because I’m not the one who will probably have to buy a new phone, but it’s really important not to panic. This is the natural emotional response to the situation, and I do realize that, but if you manage to remain calm, you have a much better chance to save your handset than if you panic and start screaming like a little girl (no offense if you’re little girls; then it’s completely natural but instead of reading this here, go and ask mommy or daddy what to do). So, anyway, it’s really important not to panic so you don’t something stupid like try to dry your phone out with a hair dryer. This is really one of the worst decisions you can make because this way you risk spreading the moisture even further. Don’t try this just because it seems logical and you’ve read it somewhere. If you use a hair dryer, you will basically guarantee that your phone will damaged beyond repair.

Take the phone apart

Remove the battery and the panels of your phone and place them on a towel. Carefully wipe them all off with another towel, trying to absorb as much of the moisture as possible. You need to act quickly. The faster you do this, the bigger the chance of saving your phone is. Wipe everything off and let it sit on the towel for a few hours. At this point, you can try using a vacuum cleaner to such the moisture out but this is optional if you’re feeling optimistic.

Assemble the phone

After a few hours on the towel, assemble your phone and place it a bow full of rice. Rice has a high affinity to water so it will ensure that the remaining moisture is removed from the phone and absorbed by the rice. Rotate the phone every few hours until you go to bed. Say a prayer if you want, because this is truly a â??Hail Mary passâ?, but this is optional. Let it sit in the rice for the night and try switching it on in the morning. If it still doesn’t work, you can try consulting a specialist, but I think that at this point it’s fair to say that you need a new phone.

Atari Asteroids Poster image

Atariâ??s Asteroids is one of most loved arcade games in history.

Anyone that grew up in the 1980’s most likely spent many hours of their childhoods hammering away on an arcade, or on the one button controller of the Atari 2600 game console because of this revolutionary game. This was truly a favorite game of many of those kids, and itâ??s still a blast to play even by the kids of today.

In 1962, a game called Spacewar! was created on the PDP-1 computer. Spacewar! was way ahead of its time. In 1978, Space Wars was released in arcades around the world and it was based on the 1962 version. The game was not a huge success, but it lead to the inspiration of the masterpiece we know as Asteroids. Eventually, a more powerful engine for vector graphics was created making the simulation of physics much more accurate. The more powerful engine led to games with more accurate graphical motion.

Asteroids screenshot imageIn 1979, Asteroids was released by Atari, and featured vector graphics for accurate motion simulation. Asteroids used a resolution of 1024 x 768 making it have more crisp graphics and motion compared to other games of the day. One of the features of Atariâ??s release was that the asteroids would get smaller as they were destroyed, until they were completely destroyed. This game even surpassed Space Invaders in popularity! Many Asteroids arcade systems came with extra large coin boxes due to the popularity of the game, and to reduce down time when the systems were full of coins.

Asteroids brought great success to Atari and allowed them to continue to be the power house of gaming from the late 70’s to the early 80’s. There was nothing like Asteroids before; it was based on a game from 1962 which was basically before video games, as we know them, even existed! Not many kids ever knew about the rich history of this game. All these kids knew was that there were rocks in space and they needed to be blown to smithereens!

Asteroids screenshot 2This game makes the player feel like they have true skills when they get past a seemingly impossible situation. Itâ??s a sense of having the ability to follow multiple targets while destroying them, and avoiding them, all at the same time; that makes this game so rewarding to play. It breeds competition between players as they see who can get the highest score and reach the highest level. The teleport button will jump the player to a place on the screen possibly out of danger, but they never know where they will end up! In addition, there is a whole strategy of being able to visualize how the edges of the screen will move bullets to the opposite side, allowing targets to be destroyed at blazing speeds. UFOâ??s also fly across the screen providing a boost to the score from targets which actually shoot back!

It seems like such a simple concept compared to the drastically complicated strategic simulators available across the gaming industry today. Sometimes simple is all that is needed for success. The fun factor and the strategy make this game amazingly addictive to play; even when played by todayâ??s gamers!

Features

Note Anytime is simply amazing and it takes note-taking to the next level. This app has everything you would want in a note app and much, much more. The reason Note Anytime is so good is because it’s not just limited to the classroom. This app is so powerful it can handle taking notes for a student on a field trip or even a realtor on a home-search.

photo (3)

Using Note Anytime you can jot down notes via a pen tool by using your finger to write out words, or you can type out text fields. You can even convert your handwriting into text if you’d like. So back to that field trip or realtor: on these trips you would need to take photos right? If you had just a clipboard with you then you would jot down notes and then you would take photos using your phone. Later on these notes and photos would have to come together via a computer application if you wanted to share them.

Note Anytime makes all of this much easier. If you want to take a photo and add it to your notes, its as easy as you can imagine. Photos, websites and items can all be added to your notes. Not to mention that items can be re-sized and layered, images can be cut via a lasso tool and moved around, and important notes can be highlighted.photo

If you’re using your iPad on a projector you can even highlight important information with the laser tool. This laser tool adds a temporary “ink” around the things you circle, which quickly disappears. So whether you’re on a field-trip taking notes, or in the classroom learning, or even in the classroom teaching, this app does it all.

Mission Accomplished

In addition to all of the great features that Note Anytime comes with, it also provides its users with free cloud storage (2GB). This insures that all of your notes are always saved and backed up to the cloud in case of an accident. Your iPad could spontaneously combust in the middle of note taking and your cloud-saved data would still be safe.

iPhone1

Notes can also be exported to PDF, saved to the photo album, emailed, shared or printed. What’s even cooler about this app is that it always saves notes in HD. You could re-size your notes down to a notecard or size them up to the side of a truck and they would still look amazing.

When taking notes you can also “zoom” into a certain section. This lets you hand-write notes or draw things at a bigger scale so you can be precise, and is then sized appropriately into the page.

Room to improve

Right now every time you scroll to a new page, that page is blurred for a slight amount of time. I figure this is because the app is working in such high resolutions that it takes a while to load everything properly. However, this could be combated if the app always had the next and previous pages available. I have a feeling that mobile devices might not be powerful enough to have multiple HD pages ready to edit, so it’s not really something to blame on the app. Even if this can’t be fixed it’s not a big issue.

Conclusion

If you regularly take notes then this is a must have app. The fact that it exports into PDF, works on almost any device, and offers cloud storage is really great. Note Anytime blows the competition out of the water.
