Apple / entertainment / TUBI: MOVIES & LIVE TV
REVIEW
Tubi turned a free movie dump into the third-biggest TV channel in America.
Fox's free streamer now owns 6.2% of ad-supported viewing, runs 260+ live channels, and asks for nothing but your attention between breaks.

Tubi was a curiosity before Fox bought it for $440 million in 2020. Six years later it controls 6.2% of all ad-supported streaming viewing in the United States — ahead of Pluto TV, ahead of Peacock, ahead of Netflix’s ad tier — and the iPhone app is the front door for most of that audience. Not because anything about it is novel, but because the bet underneath it has aged extremely well.
The bet was that 52,000 titles you can watch right now beats four prestige dramas locked behind a $15 paywall, and that an audience tired of stacking subscriptions would put up with commercials again if the catalogue was deep enough. It turns out it was. The Roku Channel, Pluto TV, and Tubi together now represent a larger share of TV viewing than any single broadcast network.
What the iPhone app does well is get out of the way of that proposition. Sign in, scroll, tap, watch — no trial, no cross-promotion, no “upgrade to remove these ads” screen. The price for that is the ads themselves, and on a long Saturday-night feature they will test you. But the quiet milestone here is that for the first time since 2010, an entirely free streaming app on iOS is a credible default, not a backup.

FEATURES
The catalogue is the headline. Tubi lists more than 52,000 on-demand movies and TV episodes plus 260-plus 24/7 linear channels — news, sports highlights, classic sitcoms, anime blocks, niche genre channels nobody else still curates. There is no paid tier, no premium upgrade, no DVD-quality watermark on the free stream. You sign in with email or Apple, and the whole library is in.
The iPhone app handles AirPlay, Picture-in-Picture, Chromecast, and CarPlay-friendly audio playback for stand-up specials and music channels. Continue Watching syncs across devices once you are signed in. A "My List" queue and a kids profile (genuinely curated, not an afterthought) sit one tap from the home tab. In April 2026 Tubi shipped the first streaming integration inside ChatGPT, so a "psychological thriller from the 90s with a twist" prompt now returns a clickable Tubi watchlist.
Live programming has crept upward of late. The 2026 World Baseball Classic runs select games on Tubi, the platform simulcasts Mexico-USA opening matches from the FIFA World Cup, and Fox uses it as the alternate-broadcast home for Apple's F1 coverage. None of that costs anything either.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
The free-and-actually-free part is not a marketing line. There is no upsell screen, no "Tubi Premium," no asterisk in the deep menu. For a household that has quietly cancelled three SVOD subscriptions in the last 18 months, the iPhone app is the closest thing to a working video lifeboat — and the studios licensing in are no longer just B-tier. Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. catalogue began rolling on March 1, 2026.
Ad load on Tubi is, by the numbers, lower than most ad-supported alternatives — roughly 4 to 6 minutes per hour against an industry mean closer to 8 or 9. The company's communications team has publicly said it has no plans to raise it. That restraint is the only reason this app gets to be in the 7-8 band instead of mixed.
ROOM TO IMPROVE
Whatever Tubi's official ad-load average is, the felt experience on a long film is worse. Recent App Store reviews describe breaks every five to seven minutes, three to six minutes long, with the same two or three creatives looping across the night. Once a viewer has seen the same insurance ad nine times in a feature, the math stops mattering.
Discovery scales worse than the catalogue does. With 300,000-plus movies and episodes available across the full library, the home rails still surface the same dozen Adam Sandler titles and a rotating set of horror originals. Search is keyword-only, recommendations are shallow, and the new ChatGPT bridge — clever as it is — only helps the small minority of viewers who think to leave the app to find something inside it. There is also no offline download on iOS, which Pluto TV and the Roku Channel also skip but which Netflix's free tier in some markets now offers.
CONCLUSION
Install Tubi if you treat streaming the way an earlier generation treated cable: something on in the background, something to flip to, something cheap. Skip it if you watch one prestige show a week and resent every commercial. Pluto TV remains the better channel-surfing simulator and the Roku Channel has the cleaner UI on Roku hardware, but on iPhone the deepest free movie library is still here.
